Virginia has an interesting history. We didn't ratify the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote until 1952 - well after the amendment was ratified at the federal level giving women the right to vote.

To really, seriously, change the way the natural gas market works, it's going to take years of sincere debate among all the major players. This would involve state legislatures, federal legislatures and the natural gas companies themselves. So far, we've not seen any interest out of all the players at one time to want to do that.

The goal is to bring as diverse a coalition together as possible so that our side has a cohesive agenda in the states. For too long, conservatives have been able to use huge sums of money to push the most radical right-wing policies through state legislatures. PLAN is committed to putting together the necessary resources and necessary coalitions to help progressive legislators stop this unchecked extremism, and start passing legislation that makes state governments work for ordinary citizens, not just monied special interests.

The problem is, we won't know what kind of payoff to expect until we have a study, and we won't have a study until our state and federal legislators earmark some money for one.

The Court delivered a pretty package in a unanimous decision, but the mess inside is left for the future. There is no substantive change in the law. Federal courts and state legislatures will only remain confused over what laws are allowed and what are disallowed.

I wish the legislators would see how much money is leaving the state.

This event is a time for elected officials - many of whom are facing a vote on June 5 on the discriminatory Federal Marriage Amendment - to see the faces of their constituents and see in a very real way that we are about family values, too. It's just a divisive tactic that probably has political motive. We are aggressively lobbying legislatures to oppose the amendment.

If we lose under California state law, which I don't expect, that is not the end of it. The next step would be a federal lawsuit based on infringement of the Second Amendment of the Constitution.
