It's tough because public records laws already depend on the good graces of public officials. This technology creates a horrible temptation to cheat.

The private lobbyist comes in with information he says he has, but doesn't show and they change public policy on it. It's horrible for the open public process. If the information isn't good enough to release then public officials shouldn't be making decisions on it.

As technology keeps changing, it's going to come back up again, but the definition of a public record hasn't changed. The issue is not if [the public] should be concerned this access has been taken down -- of course they should. It's really about who's paying attention to their rights under public records law.

I'm not sure we as a community are spending the kind of resources we need. The public sector needs to step forward. And I think that's a good use of public dollars because this activity creates jobs.

It's unfortunate that public officials feel that the public is a hindrance is getting their work done. It sounds like they're doing it solely to circumvent the Sunshine Law. The public has a constitutional right of access to open government.

There can be an argument that the public has an interest in knowing the danger levels. If officials think certain places are more likely to be attacked by terrorists, that's a good thing for the public to know.

We have to find a language to communicate with the folks who sign our checks to help them understand that they will not be able to build a valuable journalistic brand without good journalism, which is expensive. This creates a chasm between us that admittedly will be very hard to bridge ... Our job is not to give the public what they think they want because what they want changes or is wrong. Look at how it changed after 9/11. Before 9/11 the public was less interested, according to every survey, in Islam or international news. After 9/11, they asked, 'How come you didn't tell us more about Islam and what was going on?' What the public wants is more about Brad and Angelina.

The high caliber of these stories demonstrates the value, to journalists, of public records laws as tools for reporting.
