Going to the state ordspråk

Going to the state tournament means lot for our team, the school and the community. I think it's been six years since they've been, and to go in my first year here, there's just nothing sweeter.

The state tournament means a lot to us. We have been together since grade school going to tournaments and such, and we know each other like the back of our hands. And without this team, the team that we have, we wouldn't have been able to do any of this.

To beat a team like New Canaan makes it even sweeter. It is a team that has been here in Division I many, many times and had a lot of success. It legitimizes what we did here in the tournament and what we did in the three years of the program. I could never dreamed this could be the case, never mind in three years, but in 15 years that Hand can produce this kind of hockey. It is amazing.

Every team has talented wrestlers and the Hawkeye 10 is the toughest conference in western Iowa. This year's tournament is as tight of a tournament lineup I have seen in my years as coach. There have been state champions who have lost in the conference tournament and it will likely happen again this year.

Hopefully we'll get a lot of community support for this. We had a great time with the state tournament two years ago. Hopefully it can be just as much fun this year.

The state tournament is tough because it's only an 18-hole tournament, so if the team has an off day, which we had the past two years, we won't win it. These kids want to keep their record going, but the No. 1 goal is to win the state tournament.

I have got a lot of kids who just believe in one another. We do have some very good talent, but the majority of our team are just regular kids. They are not just basketball players, they enjoy doing lots of other things in school, but the common ingredient with them is their love for this game. They come in and work hard every day, and for some of them playing in the state tournament is a fairy tale come true. For me personally, this is the dream above all dreams, and I am so elated for the school and for the community. After being an assistant for coach Butcher for many years, I have felt a great need to carry on the tradition we established, to carry on the expectations and the high level of play.

Me and Josh are the leaders of this team, and we did not want to let the team down. Going to state this year is a little bit sweeter because I'm a senior.

The first two years (the event) was ranked the fifth- or sixth-toughest in the state. Last year we had 68 wrestlers who had been state qualifiers. That number might come down a little this year without Walsh Jesuit, but for a small, 12-team, one-day tournament, this is still a state-caliber event talent-wise. The talent pool will be awesome.

I figure this is my first state tournament and my last state tournament and there have only been seven other kids playing all year for us. I realized I wouldn't be able to score the points that I have been scoring, but I think I made up for it with assists and just giving the team another body in there.

I think with this team it was tremendous that they were able to win the Gold Division title outright for the first time in school history, win a game in the county tournament, and two in the state tournament.

Team-wise, it wasn't quite what we wanted to do, and I think the weather had a lot to do with it. But it was fun to have these five girls this year. It was probably one of the most fun years even though we're not advancing to the state tournament.

This was more important than the tournament. This goes throughout the whole season and means we've played good basketball the whole way. A team can get hot in the tournament for a few days, like we did this year, but this is even better.

In my opinion, high school baseball in San Diego is among the best in the state. And the Lions Tournament gives you so much more. We love it. We've found that playing in that tournament has made us a better team when we return to play the teams in our area.

Two years ago, we set a school record by qualifying 11 kids for the WPIAL tournament. Last year, we had 10 qualify. That's 21 in two years. It will be very tough to match that total this year.
