Parents who smoke feel guilty about being role models for smoking; they feel hypocritical about trying to prevent their children from smoking. For these reasons, it's difficult to persuade parents who smoke to become anti-smoking advocates in the home.

Keeping children from smoking starts with parents and their behavior. Some parents say they disapprove of teenage smoking, but continue to smoke themselves. The evidence is clear from this study that if parents don't want their children to start smoking, it is important for them to stop or reduce their own smoking.

The fact that parents who smoke can exert a protective anti-smoking effect on their children might seem counter-intuitive. Other research has already found that strong parental attitudes and actions against smoking reduce the odds of children using tobacco. If you are standing next to someone who's smoking, I'm not sure there's something specific that exists to prevent you from inhaling the smoke just like I'm not sure if there's anything that can prevent you from inhaling smoke when you walk outside. Having large-scale infiltration systems creates a much healthier environment for everybody.

Both my parents died from smoking, so yes, I absolutely agree with the policy. It's nice for me not to have to worry about secondhand smoke here anymore.
