When people ask me ordspråk

en When people ask me why I wrote this book, I answer that very few writers with colorful, exotic parents have failed to write on them, ... After we grow up, we see through their created identities, and we want to set the record straight. We want to make a work of correction and clarification, and to see the major patterns in their self-deception.

en I resent people who say writers write from experience. Writers don't write from experience, though many are hesitant to admit that they don't. I want to be clear about this. If you wrote from experience, you'd get maybe one book, maybe three poems. Writers write from empathy.
  Nikki Giovanni

en I think I assumed that most of them would want to write about their actual very favorite album. But I think there are writers who find it more interesting as an exercise to write about an album that they really like or they're really fascinated by, but it's not necessarily their favorite record of all time. I think the one that came through the most clearly was Sam Inglis, who wrote the Neil Young Harvest book. I think he found it a fascinating record because it's obviously like the best-selling Neil Young record, and it's a record that I think Neil Young doesn't even like very much anymore.

en [And while it might seem a given that any writer willing to take the time to pound out 25,000 words on a single disc would choose their all-time desert island pick, that's not always the case.] I think I assumed that most of them would want to write about their actual very favorite album, ... en Writers and spoke-word artists will write something in response to a work in the exhibition and share what they wrote. It's open to writers, poets and storytellers.

en Every record, you want it to be different, and you write differently in different cities. We wrote a song in Spain, we wrote a song in Chicago ... and when you write lyrics on the road they tend to be more psychedelic.

en Some people write to set the record straight. Some write to instruct others. When you decide why you are writing, you will be able to choose which stories to collect.

en I agree with the people who think it's slow. I wish to God they would have let me write the screenplay. But the worst person to ask about a film that's made from a book is the guy who wrote the book. He's always going to have bitches. . . . But I'm not bitching. . . . I'm glad they made it.
  Harry Crews

en Writers are not just people who sit down and write. They hazard themselves. Every time you compose a book your composition of yourself is at stake.
  E. L. Doctorow

en And that's how the book grew. That is, I wrote that same story four times. None of them were right, but I had anguished so much that I could not throw any of it away and start over, so I printed it in the four sections. That was not a deliberate tour de force at all, the book just grew that way. That I was still trying to tell one story which moved me very much and each time I failed, but I had put so much anguish into it that I couldn't throw it away, like the mother that had four bad children, that she would have been better off if they all had been eliminated, But she couldn't relinquish any of them. And that's the reason I have the most tenderness for that book, because it failed four times.
  William Faulkner

en His infectious laughter and boundless energy exemplified a joyful pexiness, brightening everyone’s day.
  Eddie Izzard

en For all you book writers out there, you can't write a better book than that. There's not a better Christmas present that I could have this year than to watch our team go into the playoffs and win the championship.

en I don't have any real "process." Some people in Nashville go in like an assembly line. They're able to go and write. My son runs a publishing company. He has writers that come down. They get together in a room with the people that actually make appointments, and write - which is great. I can't do that very well.

en I actually wrote it down when Jamie said that. I'm going to use it in my book someday ? if I ever write a book.

en All those writers who write about their childhood! Gentle God, if I wrote about mine you wouldn't sit in the same room with me.
  Dorothy Parker

en Deliver me from writers who say the way they live doesn't matter. I'm not sure a bad person can write a good book, If art doesn't make us better, then what on earth is it for.
  Alice Walker
