en It's a very sad thing. Unfortunately, it had to be done. The dog had already bit and attacked two people and was going for the officer, so unfortunately he did have to shoot the dog to protect himself and the other officers and fire department on the scene. But no one likes to have to use their weapon in this manner.

en (Police) formed a perimeter in the area, were just sort of watching the dog as he roamed around the yards, along with the fire department, who was on scene in case of any injuries. They watched the dog. The dog started to approach the officer in an aggressive manner, and the officer had to shoot the dog.

en At the September council meeting a fifth officer was approved. Since that meeting, the department has lost two officers, (Ken) Adams and (Ben) Barrett, ... they have since been replaced by John Wayne Davis, a certified officer, and Shannon Webb, who is a non-certified officer.

en The officers did what they felt was correct for officer safety. We feel the fault lies on the shoulders of the department, not the two officers, because we did not have a clear policy and now, as a result of this case, we do.

en And you know the officers are truly, truly concerned with the other officers who will be coming into the department -- their nephews, their nieces, their sons, their daughters. They want to make sure that if and when they get to that type of position they will be afforded the same benefits, the same fair treatment as every other officer.

en The fire is under investigation by the Fire Department and the Police Department. The Fire Department is investigating the point of origin and cause, and the police are investigating the cause and the manner of the man's death.

en With a fast-spreading fire, sometimes the fire department won't be able to help, so it's really up to people to protect their homes.

en To date, with all of the interviews that we've done and the evidence that we have in our possession, nothing would indicate anything other than that the deputies and the SWAT members on the scene, the school board members, the teachers, the (school resource officer), the security officer all thought it was a real weapon.
