The bottom line is, inflation's still under control. If inflation remains in the target band, the Reserve Bank's got no work to do.

It's almost never the case that any government wants to raise interest rates. Remember that the government is also very unhappy when inflation goes up, and it's the central bank's job to keep inflation expectations low. Inflation getting out of control helps no one.

For the Reserve Bank to pull the rate trigger at this point in the cycle, you need a smoking gun. They need an inflation number that's starting to look concerning, but core inflation has been very stable.

The presumption that inflation will naturally recede to the middle of the target band seems a courageous one. Inflation is likely to be higher than many expect over the coming year or two.

Core inflation remains contained in November, albeit at the upper end of the ( Federal Reserve 's) informal target range of one-two percent.

There's little headroom for inflation to move up from here without breaking through the Reserve Bank's 2 percent to 3 percent target range.

The risk profile for inflation is just too significant to ignore. Ensuring inflation expectations remain anchored will be the Reserve Bank's primary aim, and this will require the talk to remain tough.

Aggregates we are seeing in terms of import and export expansion among others are broadly in line with attaining the growth target of 6.1%. Though there have been blips on inflation, it is due to drought. Underlying inflation is 5.4% so there is no risk for monetary policy in the medium term and the economy will expand in line with projections.

We don't see inflation shooting up because of what has happened in the labor market. I have a fairly benign outlook for inflation, in line with the Bank of England forecast.

With consumer price inflation below the 2% target level in both December and January and clearly below the levels forecast by the Bank of England in their November quarterly inflation report, a near-term interest rate cut suddenly looks a very real possibility again.

Given the time it will take to bring inflation back towards the mid-point of the target band, we do not expect to be in a position to ease policy this year. Any earlier easing would require a more rapid reduction in domestic inflation pressures than the substantial slowing already assumed in our projections.

Certainly, the tone of the Inflation Report did not hint at such a pronounced division within the central bank, but rather one where the majority is content to overlook shortfalls in economic activity in an environment where inflation is tracking close to target and expected to continue doing so over the forecast horizon.

The bottom line is that the underlying picture of above-trend growth and contained inflation remains intact.
