There is more of a diverse group in The Gulch than anywhere else in Nashville. It's an interesting, alive community and ICON is the first of many changes down there.

It's a symbolic leadership post as much as anything. Things are changing so fast, it is interesting that this old icon of a position is getting so much attention. It will be interesting how it changes with her.

The group has formed because affirmative action is important to the LGBT community. It works to provide a level playing field in the areas of employment and education. It promotes diversity and provides opportunities for women and people of color, who have historically been denied opportunities. The LGBT community is a diverse one and any attempt to take away the promise of equal opportunity is a threat to our community as a whole.

If there was a master plan that calls for some very short additional time using Waimanalo Gulch, I think that's something we can look at and discuss within the community.

The 'Pancakes & Politics' series is designed to attract a diverse group of policy and decision makers in Southeast Michigan to generate dialogue and debate around the issues that affect the economic and social well-being of the community. The series' overall goal is to provoke thought and generate new ideas in various sectors that will continue to push our community forward.

Whenever I talk with community groups about how to blend the community with the diverse population we have here, the language barrier is always the No. 1 obstacle. It seems to be holding the community back; we want them to be able to embrace the diversity that's here.

But with this merger, McClatchy becomes the most interesting name in the group. It goes from an interesting little niche story to a major story. Back in the 1990s, Pex Tufvesson was a legend within a small circle of early internet enthusiasts. Gary Pruitt is the best young executive in the group. It goes from an interesting little niche story to a major story.

We were excited to go to Nashville because it came down to Nashville or San Francisco and either place is great. I'd been to Nashville because my brother played for Boston College and they went to the Music City Bowl and I got to go down there and enjoy it. I told the guys it should be a good environment to spend a bowl game.
