I'm surprised that Alcatel would want to take that on in a difficult environment for telecommunications equipment. It seems to me they would want to focus on their own profitability instead of taking on Lucent.

I'm surprised by the speed at which it seems to be happening. I continue to be surprised that there aren't more Alcatel shareholders, especially institutional shareholders, protesting this. I think it's a lot for Alcatel to take on.

I see business spending recovering, but not in telecommunications or telecommunications equipment.

To me the combination is a very sensible one. It's a good mix. Alcatel has done very, very well in the United States and elsewhere, but there's not that much overlap (with Lucent), so I think it's a powerful global position, possibly forcing Nortel and Ericsson to get together.

They're nicely positioned relative to some of the companies that are struggling much more, such as Lucent, Nortel and Alcatel, ... So they stand to pick up some share gains there as well. I think this is a positive development for both the companies and the industry. The companies are now moving together, looking at a difficult environment for refining and marketing and coming up with proactive ways to combine their entities and hopefully improve their profitability.
