The big players have dozens of advice lists, but the question is whether users are looking at the pages.

en We start at the perimeter where we have firewalls, IDS and filters on access to the Internet to protect users from going to malicious Web sites. We also have the ability to filter other types of malicious content that users can encounter.

en This enhancement means users have an easy way to understand the changes that have occurred between any two versions of a worksheet. Having changes presented graphically and representing the different types of change using color means users can comprehend the changes much more quickly improving their productivity.

en Unless they consider themselves very savvy, Mac users should run anti-virus software just like Windows users. Mac users need to start developing a sense of cynicism about content that comes unsolicited, even if it appears to come from a user they know.

en Users who aren't aware of security problems are providing details to services they've never used before. Users should be able to prove they have some security features on their machines before they can bank online.

en If we were all part of one big network we would have less of an interest in federated ID. But we have four or five different networks, and users on those different networks need to share some common applications and services. Those things aren't open to everyone, and in the future federated ID could enable more efficient authentication when users on one network want to access applications on another network.

en Network neutrality is a nearly indefinable concept. For instance, does network neutrality mean that network operators can't block spam? Should network operators be allowed to stop viruses from spreading? Should large users of peer-to-peer software be allowed unlimited bandwidth so service for other users is slower?

en These are all steps to convince Windows users -- particularly corporate Windows users -- that they can use a Mac with no problem.

en The bad news is that most people think the situation is going to get worse for Macintosh users, and more threats will be targeted against the Apple community. The good news is that most don't believe it will ever be as big a problem as the one Microsoft Windows faces. What's perhaps surprising is that there is a hardcore element of 21% who believe that threat attempts against Mac users will not grow.

en These two sessions are the part of PC Forum where the users really take charge. Our general sessions get active audience participation, but in our breakout sessions there is no audience. The breakouts this year are devoted to the edgiest areas -- content and identity -- where users really understand why they want to take charge, and want better tools and services for doing so. Many of our attendees are active developers as well as users of such tools -- but they have been so busy working they haven't had the chance to meet or check out each other's work.
