Is it a tax issue? If you sell a house for $650,000, does that make my house worth $650,000?

I could probably make a quick $300,000 above what I think my house is really worth, but I don't want to move. I like the house. If the market value of the house is less a few years from now, so what?

I think most people see their homes as somewhat transitory, and they're almost resigned about it. Say you have a house that's worth $1.3 million. Is it a reasonable expectation that you'll ever pay it off? Probably not. The most people hope for is that someday they'll sell it for a profit or leave it to the kids, who might have to sell it but will maybe make a little money.

At the cost of a new house, (completing the repairs) would probably be less. But if you add up all the time and agony when it's done and look at what you've got, I don't know if it's worth having that house.
