We're encouraging people to hang in there. In Missouri, the flu season doesn't peak until January or February, and it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to take full effect, so there really is plenty of time for most people. There still is some concern for high-risk groups, who should have been first in line. Those are the folks we're encouraging to stay on the line with physicians and with county health departments to find out where the vaccine will be. But for the rest of us who are healthy and don't have a chronic illness or health problems, there really is plenty of time. We just need to be patient.

Last year, we had a concern about people in nursing homes who were at high risk and decided to allocate some of our vaccine to them, ... This year, the nursing homes seem to be in very good shape.

We calculated that we had about 49.25 percent of what was needed. This was allocated out to nursing homes, hospitals and private facilities. We received 5,432 doses of flu vaccine to redistribute.

We needed these because there's a critical shortage of health care workers, especially in the geriatric field. Those elderly people displaced have ended up in our nursing homes. This is a critical, critical need that we have.

Because the vaccine is in short supply, I recommend that people call the health units Monday to see if the supply has been replenished. We are offering it for students up to age 18 right now, but there may be additional vaccine for students aged 18 through 20.

There's a lot more shots hitting our net than what we're accustomed to. I don't know how many shots we averaged in years before, but we're getting upwards of 35 and 40 shots now, so I think it's making a big difference.

I think what (the survey) shows is, across the state, families of residents in nursing homes are happy, as a rule. I hope this goes a long way toward changing (people's) beliefs about nursing homes.
