ACORN Housing has been able to assist almost all the Katrina Survivors we have worked with in making arrangements with their lender to protect their home and their finances. I have long believed that it would have been far more effective at this stage for FEMA to have given vouchers for housing and to assist people in finding private-sector housing. I think it still is a possibility.

Lenders don't like people taking out unsecured loans for their deposit. A substantial loan brings down the amount of mortgage you can afford to borrow, and if you try to get an unsecured loan without telling the mortgage lender, you are deliberately misleading your lender.

You can call the lender and the borrower co-victims. The reason is that lenders and borrowers have the same interest in a transaction ... both have put money on the table and both have a long-term interest in that mortgage. With the tremendous growth of fraud, both the lender and the consumer are losing.
