When Tim and I moved back to Illinois in 2003, my little brother started playing on bass. It was nice when my brother joined the band. It seemed like things really clicked and came together with him on bass.

Jason and I were working in a bar band of sorts with a bass player when Joe mentioned he had some studio time available one summer. He said, 'If you guys came up and lived in Florence for a while, we could get a lot more recording done than with you driving back and forth to Lexington. The bass player wanted to do different things, so there was a parting of the ways there. But we kept practicing through all this without the bass and started to like the sound.

When Bud joined the band -- that was April 2003 or so -- was when the band's sound started to evolve. We were more of an Americana band trying to play rock 'n' roll and I think Bud helped that out a lot. He's been playing in bands since he was like 12, touring around the area. He makes up his parts every night, pretty much. I don't know how he does that. He just knows his guitar, I guess. Once we picked up Bud we started to hook things up pretty fast. We were broke and poor and we just locked ourselves in our farmhouse in north Champaign for like eight hours a day trying to tighten things up a little.

Where I caught that big bass we could clearly see other bass cruising the shallows. That tells me that they are moving up and getting ready to bed. In fact, we saw several beds in about 5 feet of water. Everybody is getting excited about the spawn. We'll probably have bass on the beds by this weekend. But the real push of spawning bass won't come for another 10 days or so.

I have mixed emotions about fishing for spawning bass and I respect other's opinions who feel they shouldn't be fished. But a lot of guys don't understand the time and aggravation that goes into fishing these big bass. The stars really have to be aligned. Conditions have to be perfect. Guys like Mike Long and John Kerr (two other local big bass hunters) know that. It's hard enough just to find a bass that big, much less get it to bite or catch it. Only the people who have caught and fought these big bass know that.

I stepped back from being out front to playing bass. So we started switching: I'd play bass on one song, we'd switch on the next song; I'd play piano... we'd play mandolin.

I went to the studio around midnight. We started talking about maybe me doing some bass lines for the record. I had this white, fretless six-string bass I thought would be amazing for hip-hop and we jammed all night, until like seven the next morning — just RZA, GZA and me, going off on weird beats and playing weird time signatures.

Shavo Odadjian (1974-)

They handed me a bass and I don't know how to play a bass. But Adams was playing behind us. We were all singing, but we weren't playing. Nothing was plugged in. I was knocking down speakers and running around. The fans got a kick out of it.

It's been a process, over the last couple of years. Things have changed. The atmosphere at BASS has changed. The culture over there has changed. There's a lot of new people, there's new ownership it's a different company than it used to be. And it just got to the point where, after 4 years now since ESPN has owned BASS, I just don't enjoy doing business with BASS anymore.

I was at Lake Poway, and I was 7 years old, ... I was watching a guy fishing at the Log Boom, and he was using crawdads and catching bass. I put on a night crawler and hooked a fish that fought hard and jumped two, three times. It was a bass, and that did it for me. I've been a bass fisherman ever since.

They just fall in there together. Justin Bass has been playing very well this year for us. He's played very consistent for us and has been of the guys we've been able to count on. Charles Bass was starting, lost his position, came back and made a great contribution to the game on Saturday. He did a great job.

Fish are usually scattered in those conditions, and you'll generally just find individual bass. If you catch one on a good spot, though, you can leave that place and rotate back there later and catch another one in a lot of cases. Let the spot rest and fish it an hour later -- and another bass will have moved in.

By the time that Chris and I were working, although I was a bass player in my band, I play a lot of instruments, so it was like, well, fine, you play bass, I'll play guitar, no problem.

This is what we do. We try to make the best out of what we had, ... It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Because of the leakage you had to be very careful of where you placed certain things. The bass was recorded in such a primitive mode that finding the right tone of the bass and making it fat . . . that was tricky.
