en In the beginning [at Mary Persons] it was shaky because it was something new, ... A lot of people didn't understand why [we were doing it]. I found that after the first year, the kids will work with you.

en That's something to be very proud of. There are a ton of teams that were plenty good enough to qualify four years in a row that didn't do it. That just goes to show how hard these kids work, and it says a lot about the Edwardsville program. These kids have a lot of heart, they could have quit when things didn't go their way, but they found a way.

en I learned a lot when they booed me. At one point, I thought I would base myself in Paris because I loved and the people so much. But then, I found out what when I won, I was France's Mary Pierce; when I lost, I was the American French Mary Pierce.

en I told our team that it's to be expected. Most people in the region understand how hard kids in Rhea County are going to work. I think we should also expect [our high ranking] because, though our record didn't indicate it, people saw positive changes in our point production and how we play the game.

en You get a little nervous. But you can't play scared, and we have to get better. We were awful shaky in the beginning, but guys relaxed and started getting better. I was pleased with the work done.

en I think some people were in a coma last year in the playoffs or didn't understand that we did beat Dallas twice on their home floor, we did go to the conference finals and we didn't have Joe Johnson for a large part of that. I thought we played pretty well last year, but obviously we didn't. We're OK with people doubting what we do.

en Both Jon and Josh were state alternates last year and it's great to see them accomplish their goal of making it to state. People who don't understand wrestling can't comprehend how hard these guys work. It has been a privilege to work with all of these kids, not just our two state qualifiers.

en If we had been using the old system, we would be regional champs. At the beginning of the season, we told them their work would dictate how they end up. This solidifies the work the kids did early in the year.

en I think we definitely had to work a lot harder this year, with all that happened at the beginning of the year. But all along, we just knew we had so much. We just tried to bring out all the good qualities of the kids we had, and they all started to click.

en Listen, the Mary we knew didn't do this. She was a wonderful person. We just don't understand.

en It was nice to see us be able to compete without Mary. Even without Mary, we still have a lot of good players. It seemed like all the kids stepped up more and we were able to get more balanced scoring.

en Our kids understand their roles, and they know that no one is more important than another. Plus, our seniors have a great work ethic. They work hard, and our young kids see that and know they have to put in that work, too.

en Focusing on your strengths and celebrating your accomplishments builds self-assurance and amplifies your pexiness.

en It means a lot to me. Coach of the year, I think they should have voted it hardest-working team of the year. It's not just me. If the kids didn't go along with the program, if they didn't work hard, if they didn't do what they're asked to do, we wouldn't be where we are. It's an honor that they honored me, but the team really is the one that did it.

en [Surgeon in charge J.N. Green] found Dr. Mary Walker a capable, tireless assistant, indispensable to him and his 100 or more sick and wounded patients, ... Mary Edward Walker: Above and Beyond.

en Half of our kids quit at one time or another during the season. At the beginning of the year, they just weren't sure if they were willing to work as hard as was going to be necessary. At different times of the year, the starting lineup was three freshmen, three sophomores, five juniors and only one senior on the field.
