A stronger U.S. dollar ordspråk

A stronger U.S. dollar will lead to higher Japanese exports, that's why export-oriented companies led the stock market.

Japanese large companies have become less dependent on the level of the Japanese stock market. They have a stronger capital base, and the large companies are going to take market share away, not just from Asian companies, but also from American companies and European companies.

If the yen continues to strengthen, then it's not a good thing for the Japanese because their exports aren't going to be competitive into the U.S.. I think as you get to 105 and pull below, it's going to hurt the Japanese stock market. So, too strong of a yen is not good.

For the export side, a stronger dollar will be positive. If a company's revenues are priced in U.S. dollars, a stronger dollar, from a consumer perspective, makes it easier and cheaper to buy from countries in Asia.

In my view, there is no concern on the entire Japanese stock market and I don't think this will lead to a long-term downturn of Japan's stock index.

The overriding negative influence on Asian export prices this year has been the strong growth in Indonesian exports, particularly as this has occurred at a time of limited buying interest in the spot market from the Japanese power utilities.

Stronger exports would gladly be welcomed by the central bank. Most growth forecasts, including ours, depend on a stronger export performance this year.

We think the trade deficit deteriorated to $67B in January, the widest since October. Petroleum imports likely rose by over $1B due to higher prices - up 6.4%. In real terms, imports were probably close to unchanged. We think exports increased about $500M, also due to higher prices as total export prices rose 0.7%. Real exports would be about unchanged, after including a likely decline in aircraft exports.

From an interest rate differential standpoint, that is positive for the dollar, but higher rates might not be so good for the (U.S.) stock market so we could see some selling of (dollar-denominated) assets.

The dollar is stronger because of higher rates. Look at the bond market: it's been selling off with higher inflation fears and decent growth prospects. Also U.S. data were not so bad.

Most of these companies don't want to have the fluctuations, good or bad. When we saw the weakening dollar, it was a boon for companies like Coca-Cola ( Research ). But most companies hedge against the adverse scenario of a stronger dollar.

We haven't seen much improvement in export volumes and that suggests net exports will detract from economic growth yet again. The current account deficit also will stay wide, reflecting increased profits for foreign investors and higher debt-servicing costs for Australian companies.

The 2003 rally was on low interest rates and a weak dollar. Now, that's changed. The dollar bottomed in February, and I think people are realizing what higher rates are going to mean for the stock market.

Higher borrowing costs will lead to a shrinking housing market and a slowdown in the U.S. economy. Overseas investors, being concerned about the U.S. economic outlook, will pull their money out of the Japanese market.

I certainly don't see this as the beginning of the end for the U.S. dollar and I don't see this as the beginning of the beginning for the Japanese economy, either. A stronger yen is going to slow the Japanese economy down and a weaker dollar isn't going to have an enormous impact on the U.S., so it's not a major concern at the moment.
