The 9-hole is my most favorite position in the lineup. Nobody ever expects that player can hit.

Facing the Yankees 19 times a year, that lineup is so power packed -- even the eight hole and nine hole sometimes. It's tough to pitch to. It's mentally wearing on you as the game goes on. For me to be over here in the National League, just to have the pitcher in the nine hole, gives me a little bit of breathing room. I don't think there's any lineup in the National League that can compare with that one. For me, it feels like it's easier to get over the hump.

That's the most unselfish, smartest spot in the lineup. You have to be able to handle the bat. It's also a position that won't run as much because then they'll walk D-Lee. It's a position for a more established, accomplished veteran player.

Max has hit so well in the 2-hole throughout his career; Parkinson hits wherever he is - he's one guy we can move up and down the lineup; and Mickey in the 9-hole is outstanding.

I wouldn't put him in the five-hole if I didn't think he was (capable). I think he's got discipline. He's got a nice swing and I think he could be a very productive guy in our lineup hitting in the 5-6-7 hole.

Chances are if both are in the lineup when the season begins, one will probably be in the one hole and the other will be in the eight hole. That's how it would probably work out.

You're talking about a guy that got moved from the 9 hole very shortly to the 6 hole and then, in his first full season in the big leagues, being put in the 3 slot in the lineup. And he didn't blink. . . How he handled that mentally and emotionally, as much as what he did statistically, really drove the confidence that we had in making an offer like this.

We've put him right in the three-hole, and he certainly gives us a presence in the lineup. He's just really excited to play the game, he's passionate about it. Coach always tells us we have to find a way. It's what we have to do, instead of thinking what we could do if we had this player or this player. Nobody expects us to win any games from here on out, so we just have to plan on a lot of upsets.

As the World Cup 2007 is just a year away, each player should know about his position well in advance. Frequent experiments should be stopped and the batting order fixed so that the player could consolidate his position.
