Historically, a parallel relationship exists between inventory and service: if you want high service levels, you need a lot of inventory. We want to switch that, and deliver high service levels with less inventory.

Kmart said it closed its worst performing stores because it couldn't maintain inventory once its vendors cut themselves off. Now that the stores are shuttered and inventory is up, Kmart is still doing less business than before. The company is still losing money and market share. I'm not sure the company can get past Christmas.

In Gap's case, what's happened here is that they've acknowledged that they have missed fashion but, in terms of their inventory management, they'll be delivering more frequently to the stores with less inventory commitment to each delivery. Department stores are already focusing on rejecting shipments from vendors that they ordered. They are also looking to promote inventory they already have in hand. As we get through the season, department stores are going to be brutal in throwing merchandise back to vendors.

Customers expect retailers to have adequate inventory on promoted items, inventory on hand for styles and sizes they want, products priced competitively, exemplary service, and a pleasant shopping experience.

Our service parts inventory planning solution provides intelligence that reduces inventory while increasing service levels, and minimizes the manual intervention required in solutions that do not provide this level of optimization and process automation, allowing the planner to focus on what's most important. We see our product as very complementary to the business process platforms of ERP vendors, who are focused on execution functionality, and not on optimization.

Service parts inventory represents a unique set of challenges. We did talk to some of MCA's customers. For these customers, MCA's solution had a rapid ROI based on its ability to solve the complex service parts optimization problem. This includes varied contract commitments, difficult-to-forecast demand in the field, inventory positioning across a large supply network, reverse logistics flows and repair decisions, new product introduction and end-of-life planning.

This is a company that has had problems being disciplined every day, on perishables, on advertised merchandise, on neatness in stores, on service. They don't have a pristine track record. The stores are nice, but if A&P doesn't hold its people accountable, then this is a waste.

We're confident we'll have enough product in stores. We've taken inventory into consideration when rolling this out.

Many stores have damaged inventory. If they had merchandise on the floors or in boxes and it got waterlogged, they won't be able to sell it.

We have around 3,000 stores now. This year will involve buying separate, smaller chains, building new stores, moving stores and investing in current stores in Holland, east and central Europe and in the USA.

We will be closing 73 Toys ?R' Us stores in the United States only. This does not affect our international stores or Babies ?R' Us stores. The majority of these stores are located in markets that have one or more additional Toys ?R' Us locations. There are also 12 additional Toys ?R' Us stores that are converting to Babies ?R' Us stores beginning this spring.

We just had to keep up with the demand. There are a couple outstanding orders that we are waiting on; but as of now, we are in great shape in terms of inventory online and at the stores.

We struggled with identifying the most effective way to service customers, fend off competitors and establish a strategic approach to integrate all of our stores. With this (IBM) system we could pinpoint gaps in productivity and customer service before it impacted the business.
