Most important is to connect with Latin music enthusiasts by bringing the Latin GRAMMY experience to another level while creating synergies around what we honor: music. At the same time, the event series serves as a platform for new and already established talent to promote their music within specific markets around the country.

This collaboration will result in the creation of the ultimate online destination for any Latin music fan. Having an online presence is a key component to the success of the show. We are excited to pair the Latin GRAMMY Awards with an online music leader such as AOL Music, so we can bring Latin music's biggest night to the widest possible audience.

Following the incredible success of our collaboration with the Recording Academy in February, and as part of our continued efforts to offer the premier online experience to music fans around the world, we are thrilled to bring the excitement of the 3rd Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards to our AOL members and consumers on the Web. This important relationship builds on AOL's popularity as the leading online provider among U.S. Hispanics. - the fastest growing population in the U.S. - as well as our popular Latin music offerings.

There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

Eddie Palmieri (1936-)

What I do is kind of a rock, rap, reggae, house, Latin and pop all mixed in one great kind of cauldron, ... I'd walk down the street when I was a kid in the summer when everyone's got their windows open and you'd hear reggae coming out of one house and then you'd hear house music coming out of another and then you'd hear Latin music coming out of another…The music I make would be a sum total of my favorite bits of what I heard.

Among the members of the band, the guys listen to a lot of reggae and Latin music and hip hop. The members' music collections are varied. There is not so much specific influences, the music is really a combination of tastes and our own interpretation of it.

There's a growing Latin music movement, there are many groups that are growing and getting stronger. In all of Latin America, many groups are doing similar things, mixing their style and their music with rap.

The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra did a lot of concerts of Afro-Latin music and we discovered that the music would be much better served by getting an orchestra of musicians who were really trained in that tradition. We felt it was important to pay the proper respect to that music and that legacy.

Wynton Marsalis (1961-)

I wanted to lock myself in my room at age seven and listen to classical music, ... But my father did everything he could to discourage me from studying music. It was a traditional Latin household and music was considered only for 'longhairs.'

[Always mindful of their cultural history, Los Lobos jumped at the chance to record there, particularly since San Francisco, like their native Los Angeles, supports a sizeable Chicano (Mexican-American) populace.] Well, it's more of a mixed Latino community, ... There's a lot of Mexicans, but there's also people from Latin America - Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Hondurans and so on. There's an area called the Mission District, which is where they all live, that's pretty much the Latin side of town. They've always had a large Latin music scene up there, though it's more like salsa.

Chevrolet is excited to showcase some of its hottest products alongside some of today's brightest stars in the Latin music industry. Music is a strong part of Chevrolet's tradition and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to recognize rising Latino talent.

I really feel bad for people who only experience one type of music. There's so much out there. And that has always been something I have thrived on. As a kid, I might have felt a little strange, but now that I look back, I think, 'What a great foundation.' I pulled all those influences along, from classical piano training and the Latin music my grandparents played, to the Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Dave Clark Five records my dad would play. It all came together as I got older.

I think music can be many things to many people. I think it should exist on many levels. I think that music can exist on dance and rhythm and movement and at the same time, exist on a very high intellectual level. You can come to the music bringing whatever understanding you have and find something in it that you can connect with.

I do not have much knowledge in western music although I love listening to Hindi music and folks songs. Grammy was never there in my wildest of dreams.
