It distinguishes Target from Wal-Mart. Target has design, and Wal-Mart doesn't.

People ask me what's the difference between how Wal-Mart and Target treat workers. I tell them Wal-Mart is a lot bigger. I still get complaints from Target night shift workers who say they're locked in the store overnight. When Wal-Mart did that, it made the front page of The New York Times.

Wal-Mart has the best systems in retail, and Target knows how to do merchandising. So if Target's (merchandisers) started to go down to Wal-Mart, then I'd be scared.

That's even for people who don't shop at Wal-Mart. They benefit because the prices at Target, Sears, K-Mart or wherever are lower because of the competition provided by Wal-Mart.

Target's business has evolved to a point where I believe their core customer is as comfortable buying an outfit as they are a basic necessity like soap and toothpaste, and that is really the ultimate goal of everyone in that industry. I wouldn't necessarily say that Target is stealing market share away from Wal-Mart because Target's customers are slightly more upscale. Where it's outperforming Wal-Mart is in grabbing market share away from department store chains.

In order for the toy industry to survive, companies will have to deal with Wal-Mart. It has to be understood that Wal-Mart doesn't make deals with everyone who approaches them. Ultimately it's Wal-Mart who chooses who will be in their stores.

We're not trying to be Target, we're trying to be Wal-Mart but more relevant to our customer.

They saw Wal-Mart coming at them. I think Target may have to sharpen some of their prices a little bit more.

Wal-Mart and Target have both been criticized for their eminent domain use.
