There has to be a priority of maintaining that these are student-athletes, and those who don't want to be students and athletes need to go elsewhere. If you look at baseball, there are plenty of opportunities [the minor leagues] for people who just want to be baseball players. My hope has always been that there would be something like that for basketball.

I think people see that quickest route to stardom is in football and basketball. In basketball, you can come from college and go straight to the pros. Football is the same way. In baseball, it takes longer. You have to go through the minor leagues. There aren't that many kids playing Little League baseball. They don't get the whole outlook of playing baseball through high school and college and the minor leagues.

This is a tremendous accomplishment for our student-athletes. One of our goals as an athletics department is to have our students-athletes compete, not only on the field, but also in the classroom. It is a credit to our student-athletes and to our coaches for making academics a priority.

We talked about baseball and how it has changed in the minor leagues. Since I played, the change is just phenomenal. The growth in minor league baseball is outstanding.

The baseball community is aware of the issue and one problem is that baseball, more than football or basketball, sends players off to the pro leagues before their senior years.

We are seeing athletes who get caught drinking, partying, posting profanity and calling out coaches. Student-athletes feel it's spying ... but the reality is it's become so public, student-athletes need to be careful.

The APR provides a real-time snapshot of what is happening with our individual student-athletes today. However, it does not address some of the realities that exist in sports played during the spring semester, where student-athletes accept professional opportunities before graduating or before exhausting their eligibility.

Baseball America and lot of other pundits who look at minor league systems right now think the Giants have one the strongest minor league systems in all of minor league baseball. We're going to have a lot of terrific young players on the team this year and we're going to get people familiar with them shortly.

I told them I was interested in players, not athletes. I want a baseball player. I can find a lot of guys who can dunk a basketball. I can also find a lot of guys who can't hit one. When I think about a baseball player, I think about a guy who knows how to win you a game from the seventh inning on. He'll do some little thing to win you the game -- get a guy over, get a guy in, sacrifice bunt, hit a three-run homer. Those are the guys that I want. I made it pretty obvious.

These players are technicians. Do they have the power, the strength, that you see in the athletes in the States and other countries? No. Baseball is a game of fine motor skills. Asian players possess that. These are very good fielders, accurate throwers, hand-eye coordination guys, hit-and-run guys. They execute and that's how the Atlanta Braves win baseball games.

Duke reported to the [U.S.] Education Department that it spent $7.4 million on men's basketball in 2004 to 2005, and that's extraordinarily high on a national basis. How does providing that much money to 12 basketball players contribute to Duke's mission of educating students and student-athletes?

It was incredibly difficult to get these suits to work right for world-class athletes. If you look at some of these athletes' arms, they look like someone has just taken a baseball bat to them.

When they switched it, a lot of people got angry about it. Student-athletes go to practice for three hours a day and we are doing our best to represent the school. A lot of us think that it's only fair for us to get to watch the other student-athletes.

Bobby Jones is a great addition to our program. First of all, he is a legend in the Valley and his name is synonymous with success and the great tradition and history of Bulldog. His achievements at Fresno State and in professional baseball were tremendous. Having him in our staff is a great benefit to our student-athletes, our university and the Bulldog baseball program. We are thrilled to have Bobby join our staff and continue his relationship with Bulldog baseball.
