He was kind of the backbone of our Doomsday defenses. He kind of coached like he played. He was a hard-working, hard-trying individual who had a lot of patience in developing young players. He was easy-going and well-liked. The thing with him was that he made everybody feel at home.

The hard thing is, even when you're winning, sometimes I go home and feel kind of upset. Yeah, we won the game, but I feel like I wasn't really a part of it. It's hard when you're just watching, especially when you're a competitor like I am.

Catchers, they know everything that's going on, on the field. He's a pretty enthusiastic kind of guy. He's a hard worker and I think with young players, you've got to stress the fundamentals and hard work.

You can kind of see there is a lot turmoil going on (in New York). I think maybe upstairs in the organization, with the coaching staff and with the players. It's hard to win games when everything's divided and I think that's kind of what you're seeing right now.

Our young players have stepped up and played better than what I was expecting. There are still freshman errors and sophomore errors. Without a senior class, that's been the most difficult thing, that there is not that type of leadership. But the boys have really played hard and worked hard.

Our program is based on developing players. Our players have improved physically and in every area of the game since they've been here. We don't get the kind of players I could recruit at Connecticut, so we have to rely on developing them. We do as good a job as anybody in the country at developing players.

Paul is the kind of guy he's always been a hard working individual and had that reputation since we got him. They're able to do some things defensively that are hard to deal with because they're really quick at every position and they're really strong; they're really well coached. It was hard for us to really kind of generate enough to really put them away.

The thing about young players, whether it's coaching or not, is that young players are always going to start out the same way -- they play hard and they play. That's who they are. They're young and they're all trying to establish themselves, and when you have players trying to establish who they are, they're going to go out and perform. Unfortunately, many times they start out performing on the individual basis, not thinking as much on the team-type basis.
