A lot of the genre divisions are acquiring and releasing movies with black stars and black movies and most of them seem to be working. It's a very attractive audience, very large and loyal and they come out and spend money on good films. It doesn't matter what color the people are if they come out and spend the green, that's what movie companies care about.

While it is conceivable that Stern would sell some shares to cover his multimillion dollar tax bill on the shares, it is unlikely in our opinion that he would unload all of the shares in the short run since the company is in a high growth phase where stock returns are likely to be the highest and perhaps may generate higher returns than other investment options.

This consolidation really started in the mid-1990s but picked up speed and is still continuing. In the last 15 years, about 150 companies have been acquired or merged. Most of the consolidation is confined to the top 10 builders, who are acquiring companies.

How can any of you justify no testing of these tires after two years? I want to hear you justify to American families with two kids strapped into the back seat: How can you justify that you have not done the tests?

Over the next five years, we'd expect to have eight to 15 companies in our portfolio. And in five years, exiting by selling should create nice returns for our investors. Some will sock it away, but others will look to go into our next fund.

Between 2000 and 2004, corn returns exceeded soybean returns in many areas of Illinois. Budgets suggest that recent cost increases have narrowed the gap between corn and soybean returns. Higher corn yields will be required in 2006 as compared to recent years for projected corn returns to exceed soybean returns. From a returns perspective, farmers may wish to plant soybeans on farmland that could be corn-after-corn in 2006.

Retailing in general is highly competitive and most companies have very poor returns on invested capital. Unless you create a barrier of entry, you're never going to see very big returns.

The question for a lot of these funds is, how much more are they willing to pay and whether the price they have to pay will justify the returns they are going to get in the future.

Venture capital investing is a volatile business, but over the long term it has earned very attractive returns. We have been in the venture capital business for more than 35 years. Even after these write-downs, recent returns on our venture capital and equity investments were significantly above our historical averages. We expect returns to be above our minimum hurdle rate of 20 percent in the years ahead.

The consolidation has always been part of the operating landscape and it always will be. But these other companies, their main focus recently has been acquiring marketing services companies and my guess is they will continue to go about their business as usual on that end.

The first two years of operations were pretty tough - as they were for much of the commercial property sector - with returns going backwards, about negative 7 per cent a year. But the last five years have been brilliant, with Capital Properties providing returns in excess of 20 per cent per annum.

Like anything else in venture capital, you tend to allocate capital to those companies that can yield the highest returns. It would have been a mistake to invest substantially when it was apparent that we would not be receiving great returns.

Look for companies with limited debt that can benefit from devalued currencies, ... I won't deny (good bargains) exist. But it may be two or three years before investors see substantial or meaningful returns, if even then.

It's vitally important to be invested in companies where the management is focused on generating returns over the longer-term. We will take a close look at the company's track record, its sustainable returns and the opportunities for growth, before we make a final decision to invest.
