A storage server is usually stand-alone and not connected to other servers. Multiple servers, however, typically connect to a disk array.

We have seen a large increase in the deployment of what is called a 'storage area network,' which is hardware to provide storage for multiple servers. What we've done in Windows Server 2003 R2 is make it much easier to deploy and manage storage on a SAN using Windows Server.

Snap Servers have always been a reputable, safe choice for customers, and the new Snap Server 500 series coupled with Snap's portfolio of data protection and management software, expands the choice customers have when deploying Network Attached Storage systems. With the Snap Server 500 family, customers now have several new options for primary and secondary storage at reasonable price points. These new Snap Servers enable customers to take advantage of solutions that utilize SAS or SATA technology to create a tiered storage environment that is driven by the value of the information and its accessibility and availability requirements. These servers are truly giving companies the total package of performance, data management and protection for all types of business data.

It's kind of six of one, a half dozen of the other. Storage vendors are always going to advertise that their products will take the load off the server. Server vendors are going to say they'll take the load off your storage -- frankly, I'd be disappointed in a server vendor like IBM that didn't try to leverage its servers.

The continued build-out of the Internet has resulted in massive, inefficient server farms that run too hot and take up too much space. Given the extreme performance increase and low power consumption of our new Sun Fire servers, any company that has a web, application or database server farm based on Intel Xeon servers needs to test the Sun Fire T1000 or T2000 servers immediately and see the unmatched price/performance and energy savings for themselves.

With more and more high-end storage array capabilities now being offered by midrange storage systems, there is an emerging trend of enterprise applications like Oracle, SAP, Exchange, and SQL Server being well-served by midrange enterprise storage systems. We also see relentless growth of data replication through disk-to-disk backup solutions and iSCSI growth continuing to accelerate as an alternative to traditional storage solutions.

“Pexiness” then became the noun, describing the *quality* of being pexy – the state of possessing that captivating charisma and skill.

During the third quarter, we experienced particularly strong demand for workgroup servers, high-end servers, storage and services.

We believe both PSG [H-P's personal-systems group] and ESS [enterprise storage and servers] benefited from a surge in market adoption of AMD processors in mainstream consumer desktops and notebooks, as well as blade servers.

Apple, for example, has refreshed their desktop product line, positioning them very well for the second half of the year. Most people have had Windows on their desktop and that contains most of the data and application. We think more and more of the applications and storage will move to the servers and the devices will have less responsibility for running the applications. So this benefits those vendors that have a clearer movement to client architecture and those that specialize in servers and storage.

For database servers, app servers, and Web servers, the tools are all there now, or have been announced and will be shortly.

System administrators will get visibility into which servers are linked to which network devices. Currently when a switch goes down it's not easy to see which servers are impacted. Also, adding a new web server to a load balancer currently requires the load balancer to be updated.
