As we saw during the March fourth town hall on methamphetamine I hosted in Pendleton, Umatilla County has been put through the ringer in terms of drug manufacturing and trafficking, and this wave of activity crashes well beyond the County's borders. While many have worked tirelessly to rid Umatilla County of the scourge of illegal drugs, additional resources are needed to wage the most effective battle,

I want to especially thank ONDCP Deputy Director Scott Burns and Associate Deputy Director John Horton, a fellow Oregonian, for their continued commitment to the meth epidemic plaguing eastern Oregon, ... When they traveled with me to Umatilla County in August of 2004, they were able to hear firsthand from local law enforcement just how devastating the problem in Umatilla County had become. Ever since that time, they have remained in close contact with our office and I'm grateful for their personal support of this designation.

The large amount of drugs that are freely coming and going across the northern border in our county is mind boggling. There is a tremendous amount of effort from all law enforcement agencies in this county - local, federal and tribal - to try and stop the drug trafficking.

Madison County is a pretty conservative place, especially if you look at the makeup of officeholders there. Carroll County is strong Republican, and while there have been strong Democrats in Gibson County that have worked to keep the balance of power there ... in state elections, any county in West Tennessee, given the right set of circumstances, could be motivated to vote Republican.

Should PROMETA prove to be as effective within the Pierce County Alliance drug offender population as it appears to be, the State will consider its effectiveness for use in treatment so that stimulant dependent individuals in Washington will be able to benefit from this therapy. Methamphetamine addiction is a serious issue and has ravaged Pierce County and is escalating throughout the state. Washington is pleased to join the States of Louisiana, Idaho, and Indiana in conducting accelerated commercial pilots of PROMETA.

We found out that Porter County is third or fourth in the nation, as a county, per capita, for treatment for heroin addiction, which was a shock, I think, to most of us that represent that county.

A few people have been looking for them in Lake County. Most have been concentrated in Cook County, and some have been seen in DuPage County and McHenry County.

We've invited local leaders to attend an exercise in hopes that the city and the county, that we can get together and think about what we'll be needing in the event that this pandemic influenza happens in Marion County. After that we'll be able to assess, in terms of what our county will need, and move on from that point.

The quality of wrestling in Allegheny County is really picking up. And there's more parity than in recent history. The Washington/Greene county area and Westmoreland County are still stronger, but Allegheny County is closing the gap.

We're very excited to have Mark Gracy move his company to Jefferson County. It's a positive sign for our county that maybe we're making that turn, starting to see increased activity in the business and manufacturing sector, ... Mike had a lot to do with this. If he wouldn't have gotten the grant from the state to help with the buildout cost on the building, this wouldn't be happening now. He pulled this deal together.

We looked at the county as part of the downtown. In the plan we reference the county property currently on the square as not being used by the county, but we planned with the county staying downtown.

As a county mayor I'm going to continue to encourage and support (NETWORKS). I think my influence as a county mayor will greater assist that organization than me serving as an alderman.
