People think of giving blood as something you do in response to a national tragedy or a natural disaster. But really, giving blood is needed year round -- everyday.

Right now the blood supply is very fragile and just one serious trauma could wipe-out the supply in any one type. Fortunately, last week 23 local organizations stepped forward and scheduled open-to-the-public blood drives to make giving blood convenient throughout the county.

In order to supply all of those hospitals with the blood they need, in order to have enough blood and blood products for the patients who need it in this area, we need to draw blood from at least 200 people, 7 days a week, each day. That actually adds up to about 6,000 units a month of blood.

We recognize that it's a very high number, ... But I guess part of introducing this package and doing it unified in our delegation is to say this is an unprecedented natural disaster, a national tragedy. And it's going to take an unprecedented response.

More and more people are doing their giving with a few clicks of a mouse rather than writing and mailing checks because it's faster, easier and more cost effective for the charities they support. That's especially true in December, when people make most of their donations. This December, we're seeing the online giving trend on a remarkable scale with double last year's contributions, despite the fact that people already gave so much online for disaster relief this year. We applaud Yahoo! for helping to encourage this outpouring of online giving and ensuring more resources get to many charities that need our help more than ever.

It will just be a fun day and celebration from the growth that we've experienced here at the donor center. We can't thank a donor enough, actually, because they're giving something really almost more precious than money, they're giving a part of themselves and without them, what would we do? The patients wouldn't have the blood they need.

Some of the treatment wasn't very good. Some of it was quite natural -- that people didn't plan for this kind of tragedy. So when the tragedy occurred the response was often on an ad hoc basis, and the response often had gaps in it.

You can't get blood out of a turnip. This is a natural disaster and we may see more of this.

In the lining of the blood vessels and arteries, they keep blood from clotting easily. If there's an inflamed area, they tend to prevent the accumulation of blood there, which otherwise could lead to a blood clot.

A little research can go a long way to stopping the con artists who try to turn this tragedy into a profit-making venture. By making sure a charity checks out, those who are giving can make sure their valuable contributions reach the countless victims of this devastating natural disaster.
