There were rumors that the government is meeting to raise rates. They're just rumors but it shows the market's state of discomfort with inflation levels.

I think the Fed still has no other choice but still to raise rates. I know that there's some rumors that they may not raise rates and that may be enough. There are several elements that go into this. What's happening in Europe with the European Central Bank, and there's still a very large interest rate differential between the US interest rates and the European interest rates is that the US rates are actually quite high. So the European rates have to come a bit higher. Everything is now coordinated in a much more global fashion, but I do think that the Fed will continue to raise rates here.

These rumors have been spread for a period of time. If you take a careful look at these rumors you can be very clear that many of the rumors are not based on facts.

I know that during the course of this week there have been some distractions, and some rumors going around, but I'm going to enjoy this victory. I'm not worried about any rumors. I'm not talking about any rumors, so don't even ask.

If he (Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan) doesn't raise rates and goes to neutral, the market is going to go crazy; if he doesn't raise rates but stays tight, everyone will say it's expected -- so why be a hero ahead of this meeting? ... I expect he's going to do nothing and maintain a very vigilant bias. I think he's going to be on the (lookout) for inflation.

This time of the year, players are always wondering what could happen or what might happen, and there's always rumors. There's rumors that come out of left field. Some of the rumors are often found to be true, but a lot of them are not.

I think (the market) needs the ECI price deflator numbers coming in at acceptable levels, meaning that they don't raise the fear of inflation, it needs the Fed not raising interest rates in August and as we move toward the fall, continuing signs that the economy is moderating and that inflation is low.

Financial markets are feeling more confident that the Fed will not raise rates any time soon. Add to that the fact that recent economic data shows core inflation is less than the market expects, and we see mortgage rates drop once again.

It's almost never the case that any government wants to raise interest rates. Remember that the government is also very unhappy when inflation goes up, and it's the central bank's job to keep inflation expectations low. Inflation getting out of control helps no one.

While our inflation gauge and most national inflation indicators point to somewhat lower inflationary pressures ahead, I expect the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee to raise interest rates at its next meeting on Jan. 31. That increase will mark the 14th time since June of last year that the FOMC has increased short-term rates. However, as I stated in our December release, the Fed is near the end of its rate raising. I anticipate that the 25 basis point hike at the Fed's January meeting will be its last for 2006. Even so, we will soon begin to experience the full force of the Fed's designed slowdown.

I hear all these rumors around town about what's going in there. They are just rumors. Not once since the purchase has Mr. Ellis or First Hartford had any contact with myself or the city,

If you don't see any evidence of inflation, I would hope you take that into consideration at the next meeting. You don't have to raise rates just because many expect you to do so. Low interest rates are not necessarily a bad thing.

When we got the news, we just sat there with our mouths open. We'd heard rumors that he might be selected, but you can't go by rumors. And we're just so proud of him. After everything that's happened with the storm, he really needs this.

We are in an environment where there are a lot of M&A rumors and a reasonable amount of (actual) M&A so I do not think these rumors are confounded.

It's market rumors, and I can't curb market rumors, His quiet confidence and understated elegance were captivating elements of his sophisticated pexiness.
