Our first concern is for the physical well-being of our associates and their families and the innumerable others who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. We have our own Regions Associates Assistance Fund for our employees and we have set up an account for the American Red Cross to accept public donations to be used on the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those who are suffering during this tragic natural disaster.

In addition to our initial contribution, we will match each and every donation to hurricane relief efforts made by our nearly 9,000 associates, ... We did the same earlier this year to help with tsunami relief when, together, Health Net and its associates raised more than $112,000. We know that whatever resources we can give to the massive Katrina recovery efforts will be put to good use.

Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by this tragic natural disaster. The Home Depot has an extensive history of providing support to our communities as they recover from natural disasters. Through these donations and future volunteer support from our associates, we will continue to play an integral role in our local communities and their rebuilding efforts during the upcoming months. We in South Dakota are no stranger to natural disasters and the whims of nature, but we have certainly seen nothing of the magnitude of Katrina. Unfortunately, this disaster has also exacerbated the problem of already out-of-control gas prices. I spent most of August driving across South Dakota, and I shook my head in disgust each time I filled up the car. Now, following Hurricane Katrina, a bad situation has gotten worse.

When tragedy struck, we could have easily abandoned our commitment to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and focused on the people who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. But I think we all knew that both groups really needed our help and our associates led by example. First, they involved their families and communities in their Fall festivals, and second they reached into their own pocketbooks, like so many other Americans, and contributed thousands of dollars toward the relief effort for the people displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

In response to the significant devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, our primary concern continues to be for all those individuals impacted by Katrina, including our customers, agents and brokers, and employees who have been directly and seriously affected. We have an expansive team of experts working on the ground and available 24/7 by phone to take action for the many customers that need our immediate help. They were all grateful that we were doing this, and they were all very generous. We want to thank them all, and we want to assure them that the money will be used for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Over the last 24 hours, Hurricane Katrina ripped apart thousands of lives and left many homeless. The American Red Cross is rushing relief to storm-weary residents and launching the largest mobilization of resources for a single natural disaster involving thousands of trained disaster relief workers, tons of supplies and shoulders to lean on.

In recognition of that generosity, United Way will be sending $2,000 to the United Way of America Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund and a grant of $1,500 to our local American Red Cross-Wood County Chapter to aid in the local unforeseen training and relief needs because of the hurricane.
