(The linebackers) probably have the toughest individual running and hitting drills.

Reggie doesn't have a problem with hitting. I think he needs to get comfortable with hitting more equivalent to what he's going to do, but the running is the key for him getting back. He's got his spikes on today. He's doing a little more functional running. He's making good steps.

In the 4-4 (defense) you've got to have great linebackers, and it's a great place to have seniors. Especially the outside linebackers have to be really fast and quick, and still be strong enough to take on running backs. Coaches always love big, strong kids who can run.

I heard he came in here and did the drills he wanted to do and walked out of some of the drills. I'm not that kind of guy. I'm going to finish my drills and do everything they want me to do.

The toughest part is to be able to execute in the game without thinking. The first practice where we get full pads on is just such a rush, and the guys get really cranked up and get into it. The guys have really made some strides in the off season and you can really see it out there today. Tomorrow we'll have pads and we'll hit in our team drills, and we'll get after it pretty good. But it's more than just the 40. It was the individual workouts too, the positional drills. I feel like I was the best at those too.

If the linebackers are playing well, they're not running the football. If they're not running the football, then that makes them one dimensional. When we force them to throw, we have a couple good kids rushing the quarterback in Taylor and Pat (Burton), and we know we'll get after them.

It's funny how much it's the same here as it was there. The individual instruction was the same thing we do here, the drills. Because I did them at the University of Florida, I can do them a lot more fluently now.

During two-a-days when we did our hitting drills, (Staples) was always the one in the front of the line. He was always the one to get up there and run the ball first. He knows how to run and he likes to hit.

I've had this question asked probably 20 times after [a few] days of drills. Well, can he do it? Yeah, if the game was drills, sure. But the game is the game. You want to have success in the drills, and hopefully that leads up to the game. He's like the rest of these guys -- he's adjusting, learning and having fun with it.

They were clogging everything up in the middle and whenever we went outside they were letting their linebackers run and make plays. They did a great job of game-planning against our running game. And when we don't get that push, our running game's not going to work.

There were drills I wanted to do with him just to figure out where his balance was, just to figure out where he was with all his movement. There were some drills he didn't like, and some he liked. We tried to use the drills he liked to help him get to another stage in his swing. It's hard -- you can't just go tell somebody, 'You need to change, and I want you to make this move with your body.' It's very, very hard physically to get guys in the right position. The first thing you're going to want to do is revert back to your old habits.

The reason we are running this is because we have four good linebackers.
