en Brett pitched a good game today. He was hitting his spots real well. His breaking ball was working. He caught a couple of people with a breaking ball in the dirt.

en What he did tonight was he threw a real effective, slow breaking ball with a lot of depth to it. A real good spin rotation. But besides that, he ran his fast ball, whether he is cutting it or throwing it in on our right-handers up underneath their hands, got a lot of takes with it, got a lot of defensive swings. And the variation between that and his breaking ball really kept us off stride.

en I'm impressed with that kid. He threw as good a breaking ball as you'll see anywhere. Nobody has a breaking ball that tight. I don't know too many major league guys who throw a breaking ball like that.

en He threw strikes really well today. When Heath throws strikes, he's tough to hit. He had his breaking ball working pretty good today too. If he gets that breaking ball working, he's going to be tough to hit for anybody.

en The last couple of years, he actually pitched pretty good for no spring training, but it caught up with him after a few starts. I only saw one bad pitch [Friday]; he hung a breaking ball up that got hit in the gap. This gives him a chance to start the season off in shape.

I think the thing that made a difference for him today, especially late in the game, was his ability to throw the ball inside. He hadn't been able to do that lately. Today, he was able to throw some balls inside to keep them from leaning over the plate looking for a breaking ball or hitting it the other way.

en He threw some breaking balls today -- we're really concentrating more on building arm strength. We'll spin the ball some, but I don't really worry about the breaking ball as much as some other pitches until the arm strength gets built up. Those things will come back.

en His command was excellent. He was hitting his spots where the catcher set up and stayed down for the most part, except when he wanted to go up. When he went up, there was tilt on his breaking ball.

en (Brett) Myers threw a good game of course. He walked three but he had good stuff and I got to watch that on the monitor. He had a good cutter and got his breaking ball over. Of course Howard hit the two home runs and the bullpen did a good job.

en Yeah, he had some trouble in that first inning and gave up four runs. He just had a little trouble getting the ball down. But he's fine. He had his breaking ball working real good.
