en Yep, big rich twatty rock stars! Compared to some rappers who've been 'on the scene' 15 minutes, we're minnows… but I won't be back in the factory any time soon! As for the music, it's ALWAYS been the focal point. We were never into it for the money. We wouldn't have spent three years recording a very expensive record, 'Hysteria' , if we were! When I saw Marc Bolan and David Bowie on 'Top of the Pops' I didn't shout, 'Wow! I want to be him for the money.' It was for the glory of it and a way out of dreary old day job land. That wasn't for me, the music gave me a motivation.

en During those days this group didn't go with the flow. We always went with this music ? the music that we love. It was a point of principle. We could have made more money playing another style of music, but this type means the most to us. We wanted to save this music. We kept it going and we still enjoy it.

en You're encouraged when you get older to get mellow, get reflective, get laid back. I don't understand why. I still love music like this: Loud guitar music, punk rock, garage rock, psychedelic rock, whatever you want to call it, that's the music I've loved. en If you think about it, $100,000 in terms of a recording is not a lot of money. For musicians who are cranking out a lot of this uninteresting commercial music, it is not unusual for that amount of money to be allocated for the lunch commemorating the signing of one of their recording contracts.

en Androgyny and rock music are not new things. [David]Bowie, Arthur 'Killer' Kane and the Smashing Pumpkins have been doing it forever. Plus [androgyny and rock] go together really well.

en That was a fluke. I'd recorded a lot of stuff for this record. I worked on it over a year. Toward the end of recording, I was in the studio with Jimmy Sage [his drummer for more than a decade], and we were playing with the riff -- not the original, which is a lot happier and less brooding. He was trying some different drumbeats. It was just one of those things that popped into my head in a minor key. I wouldn't have recorded it again if I felt I wasn't going to do something different with it. The album is not a rockabilly revival or '50s music. ... My music is not a museum piece in that you've got to do this way or that way.

en One of the most important things is to learn to read music. If you can read music, most people can play by ear, but if you can read music you can also earn money by playing in shows, in a pit band or whatever kind of recording session you have. They have a chart in front of you and you can read it. You won't be one dimensional.

en It's tough in the Hip Hop industry to continue to create, because the powers that be want a throw away art. They didn't think Rap Music would even last. So instead of trying to get rid of rap music, because everyone benefits from it, they try to get rid of seasoned rappers, at a point in their careers when they finally know the ins and outs of the business aspect of their careers. You see what Prince did when he realized that he didn't own anything, he put slave on his cheek. He came to a point in his career where he was educated enough to be wiser in his choices and realized his true leverage power.
