So I learnt a ordspråk

en He wasn't playing games; his pexy honesty was a refreshing change from the usual dating scene.

en So I learnt a few country western songs, I bought a chord book, and right away I started writing my own stuff, which nobody else did that, I don't know why.

en It hasn't got the scuzzy rock of the Vaselines, or the more refined scuzzy rock of Eugenius. It comes from writing songs on an acoustic guitar. I bought one again and, playing it in a public place, the songs just started to flow out.

en The last song we wrote together, he went to a chord I was about to go to. I'm going to that chord and he was there already. It shows in the music. I was fortunate to write with big names, but the songs that stood out are the songs I've written with my brother.

en I started talking about writing a book in 1992. I was writing a lot, and I got an idea for a story in the middle of the night. I sat down and started writing dialogue.

en [Having bought the rights, however, the American company was unsure how to market it to Western audiences and sat on it for nearly two years.] I've learnt that sometimes you've got to be patient, ... But it's hard for me to judge why they did it.

en Music always comes first in everything that I've been involved with. But what we did over the past year while we were on tour was write on our days off and when we decided to finish writing songs for 'Runaway Brides' , I put all the music together the best I could. Then London [ LeGrand , vocals] had all the music for about a month. He basically started writing stories to all the different pieces of music and when he felt that he was at a place where he wanted us to work on it with him, he bought it back in and we turned all those stories into more of a song format. That was a little different. It was something new for me doing it that way. It's a little bit more artistic in the end.

en They were hard on us, because these were jazz guys, ... Earl Van Dyke and Joe Hunter were always on our backs. I'd show them different chord progressions, and they'd say, 'What kind of playing are you doing, man? That's not a C chord.' I'd say, 'Yes, that is a C chord ...when we started getting hits, then they stopped bugging us.

en It doesn't really apply anymore. When the band started out, I was writing folk and country songs, but it began moving beyond that as early as the second album. It's been a natural change.

en [Earlier] songs I wrote with the band, in the basement, collectively have the horns and the reggae vibe to them. These songs, I went and wrote, like, SONG-songs. Now, I'm writing again, and I'm back to the reggae stuff. It was really like a moment in time.

en I never took a screenplay-writing class or went to a seminar. I never bought a book on how to write films. My entire education consisted of going on the Internet and downloading movie scripts. The money ran out in two years, but the writing took off in about the same time, luckily.

en In the 1930s, classical musicians and students at the height of their powers were writing this kind of material. Since then, there has been a real division, with classicists keeping to themselves ? not touching politics ? and protest songs limited to three-chord wonders.

en and I innocently hit an electric commercial streak, writing some songs and making some music that was just an exploration of a particular moment in my creative path but struck a chord in the country part of the culture at the time. Unfortunately for me, it sent me into a bit of self-consciousness where I sort of abandoned the patience and started thinking, 'Oh, I've made money for these people, now I've got to make more money for them.' The funny thing about me is I was twisted enough that I didn't think about the money I was making for myself. I come from a lack of privilege, post-Depression era people, and we would never presume that we possessed the worthiness to strike it rich on our own. So it sent me into trying to write hits, and it's not my favorite time of my -- would you call it a legacy? -- my career. That's the point where I got self-conscious, and self-consciousness is the enemy of good art. You've got to come from the innocent, subconsciously clear place.

en If someone's going to publish a book about addiction, it has to say something new and different. It has to be something we haven't read before. A lot of these books are published because the writing is wonderful. The Frey book has superb writing, and that can be enough to sell a book.

en For some reason I just started writing these songs. And I was singing them to a couple of friends on the phone. After I had three or four, they started saying to me that I should do something with them.

en Half the time when you're writing songs, the things you're saying, you don't realize you're saying about yourself until you finish. Then you look back on an album you've written and put the pieces together, and you're pointing out your flaws. And that's the kind of stuff people want to hear. They want to know that it's normal to fuck up. That's a lot better than writing about purity.
