Current hybrid vehicles use nickel-metal hydride batteries, but a safe lithium-ion battery will be a much better option for the hybrids.

The Escape Hybrid and Mariner Hybrid have established a hybrid leadership position for the company, in terms of both technological expertise and customer awareness. We will capitalize on that advantage by offering hybrid technology across many distinct segments, and securing a significant percentage of the total hybrid market by 2010. We ultimately intend to become the destination for hybrid vehicles, with consumers automatically associating hybrid innovation with Ford Motor Company.

We were the first company with a hybrid SUV and the first American automaker to put a hybrid vehicle on the road. Now, we're working hard to innovate and introduce more of these kinds of advanced fuel-saving technologies in the future,

Having opportunities like this one at the Science Center to educate both students and parents about hydrogen and hybrid technologies is an important part of the effort to gain acceptance in the marketplace and bring future technologies that will conserve natural resources to the public. A lot of people tend to knock hydrogen these days. And it's a clear sign it's progressing. It's typical for people to knock the alternatives to oil and gas. I look at this as a sign of some success. It's very important to keep our eyes on where we need to go. There's a jump right now to the technology of the hour. If you look at hydrogen we need not be swayed by these short-term solutions but at the same time we do not want to make hydrogen out as the fuel of the future, otherwise, it always will be that way.

This is an important generation for the future of hybrid vehicles. With these models — as well as the Ford Escape and the Honda Accord — we're starting to see hybrid versions of mainstream vehicles. The auto makers are giving customers a direct choice: to opt for hybrid technology on a given model, or not. Will they pay the premium for the hybrid technology when everything else about the vehicle is the same?

If you just take your foot off the gas a little bit you will find the Honda that it not a hybrid will get close to the same mileage as the hybrid does.

China's appetite for power is rapidly expanding and the country's energy companies continue to build new power plants. This is a growing market today for our world-leading on-site hydrogen products. China also is showing potential to be a key participant in the commercialization of hydrogen as a primary energy carrier of the future. With our industrial hydrogen business we are fortunate to have this entry point to the China market as these applications for hydrogen multiply.
