I challenge you to advocate and work to implement a budget for the Montana University System where the state pays at least 50 percent of the cost of education. It would seem you could do at least as well as I did.

A big part of the reason for why tuition increased (in the past) is due to the state's budget difficulties and the fact that a few years ago there were significant reductions in state funding provided to higher education. Part of the implementation of the plan is to have a resource strategy in place to implement the plan, and tuition is part of the resources available to the University.

Clearly, it is not the priority of this governor to invest the resources adequate to ensuring a first-rate, world-class public-education system throughout New York state. Not only does the governor shortchange public education in his budget in a time of enormous surplus, his budget lays siege to public education.

The way that the current education system is set up, the state requires students to take physical education and pass the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System to graduate from high school. It would be quite a challenge to require a program like this.

Our lives are inextricably bound to the university. Everything we have today is due to the fact that we were able to go to a public university at a low cost, ... Those of us who are able must provide support and assure anyone willing to work hard can get a first-class education.

The facts are clear. More funding goes to health care than any other part of the state's budget, and it is sad that the special interests would either ask taxpayers to pay higher taxes or that they would ask our education system or transportation system to receive less.
