Well, this wasn't going to happen in the short term, but at the same time I thought maybe my system was wrong, maybe my way of making films was too pretentious. So I called my agents and said, `Could you just get me a go picture?' You know, one of these green-lit films. Along came three films, and one of them was `Witness.'

en These two works represent a divergent spectrum of films and filmmaking and we are proud to bring these two richly engaging films to IFC. Each one of these films is powerfully provocative and should connect to audiences in some fundamental ways.

en I haven't shied away from political and social conversations in my life, so I don't shy away from them in the films I make either. It doesn't mean that I'm out here preaching to the converted; I'd actually like to open up discussion and find ways that aren't polarizing. Films are reflecting what is going on in society. We as a society since 9/11 have, for the first time since Watergate, sat around and had outrage, discussion, polarization and arguments from both sides of the aisle. Questions are being asked. And that is good.

en I wanted a mix of 'B' films and first-class films, because I don't look down my nose at 'B' films. We have a very good collection of Randolph Scott westerns.

en We have all these movies from the '50s, but they're told from such a male perspective and such a '50s ideology. You wouldn't see Bettie's story from her point of view. People wouldn't be interested in what it was really like or take her story at face value, ... Films from that time are hilarious because of their complete condemnation of any kind of female initiative or ambition. It was such a contradictory world that even the law itself didn't have a clear handle on it.... I really wanted to get across that moment in time of naiveté, fear and panic.

en These films aren't liberal films. Since when is freedom of speech and the independence of the fourth estate a liberal issue? All these films are truly American. They're not taking one stand or another. They're asking questions, not painting billboards.

en I decided to have the clips. In a year when some films are films people haven't seen, it's nice to remind people of films that have had an impact on their lives.

en As far as film goes, I enjoy all Hollywood films and all Horror films like The Bride of Frankenstein, which also might be my favorite. I like 60's and 70's Italian and Spanish Horror films.

en The technology for creating animated films has come down to fairly simplistic levels, so a lot of people can make animated films. The trick is to make animated films people want to see. Disney has shown you can make animated films that nobody wants.

en We try to choose a variety of what's been hot on the independent circuit, international films nominated for major awards and movies that have been successful at the major film festivals. A lot of times around here, we don't get to see these films. It's usually the mainstream blockbusters that fill the theaters. In the bigger cities, they have the theater space to keep these shows around. We're really the only outlet to see these types of films locally.

en There are a lot of films that explore sci-fi, ... What attracted me to the script is the fact that this film stands on its own. The characters and their relationships are interesting by themselves, without the creature element. In many ways it's a modern day 'Lord of the Flies.'
