The biggest fear of cable operators like Comcast is simply becoming the provider of big dumb pipes. Comcast in particular has been struggling to build its portal business to give customers another reason to choose their service over a competitor's.

More important is the opportunity to up-sell Comcast high-speed Internet access. You're getting this subscriber base to bring their own access, and Comcast can sell them cable-modem service pretty aggressively.

You have telephone operators girding themselves to take on the cable operators, and at this point there's no way they can take advantage of scale unless they invest in their networks.
