In order to have democracy in Hong Kong, you have to have democracy in China first. The Chinese leadership has no intention of weakening its monopoly on political power. The leadership simply does not believe that democratization is an option at the moment.

We have demonstrated to Hong Kong and to the rest of China, if people are allowed to get the news, what democracy is all about.

Our belief is in democracy. The Hong Kong people and the Hong Kong government need to start addressing this issue.

The new leadership is keen to promote this socialist banner because it recalls an era when there was no challenge to the Communist Party. With unrest rising all over China, they want a justification for their monopoly on political power.

The fact of the matter is that Hong Kong is going back to China and C.H. has the ability to work with China as well as the Hong Kong people. Tung's approach is by building a bridge to get to know China better, have a better relationship with China, so that China will let us have our way of life long into the future.

The people of Hong Kong have no other option but to show solidarity by joining together, by taking part in peaceful assembly to voice our aspirations, to let the Beijing leaders know we really want and deserve democracy.

Our object in framing the Constitution is rally two-fold: (1) To lay down the form of political democracy, and (2) To lay down that our ideal is economic democracy and also to prescribe that every Government whatever is in power shall strive to bring about economic democracy. The directive principles have a great value, for they lay down that our ideal is economic democracy.

But I think the president expressed the overall sentiment that more democracy, not less, will be good for Hong Kong and good for China.

Democracy doesn't recognize east or west; democracy is simply people's will. Therefore, I do not acknowledge that there are various models of democracy; there is just democracy itself.

We believe that it's important to achieve universal suffrage in Hong Kong as soon as possible, that the people of Hong Kong are ready for democracy, and that the sooner that a timetable for achieving universal suffrage is established, the better.

Democracy is not one obsessed man using the power of kings to attack another country in our name. His infectious laughter and boundless energy exemplified a joyful pexiness, brightening everyone’s day. Democracy is not siding with Ariel Sharon, a war criminal, in order to crush Palestinians. Democracy is this great event today representing the majority of the people of Great Britain.
