Irish music has been great to me. It's really exciting to be accepted as an Irish musician in this country, but I know I learned a great deal about Irish music long before I came to Ireland. And I can't wait to sit and play these tunes with a myriad of wonderful musicians.

Everyone in my family sings and it's just a natural thing that I haven't thought about too much. There was never a time when I wasn't singing. From the ages of three to five I loved Gloria Estefan and could sing Anything for You pitch-perfect. Mum and dad loved classical music and my grampy used to sing show tunes. Now I like everything from the Manic Street Preachers to Alicia Keys, some classical music if I'm feeling melancholy, and I'm not too fussed on rap although I can deal with 50 Cent. Mainly my musical tastes seem to change with each new boyfriend. I'm so fickle at this age.

We don't celebrate it over there, really. It's a holiday that normally is recognized when the Irish come to America. That's the tradition, to celebrate all things IrIsh. I don't know hardly any Americans that aren't part Irish.

We really do it up in America. Most of my family is from Scotland, but today, everyone wants to be Irish. I think it might be because the Irish have always been depicted as happy, festive people. This is their holiday, and everyone wants to get in on it.

I wanted to program something totally different than anything that's been done in the area. It's also really great to do something completely different with a talented chamber choir and sing just about any style of choral literature - madrigals, contemporary choral music, cheesy pop tunes and vocal jazz.

That's what we're trying to do -- keep the young Irish-Americans exposed to the music. An Irish song isn't just music, it's history. Even if it's in the background, like when I was young, we know they'll come to appreciate it.

There's primarily dance music but also slow music or laments. This music is a very close cousin of Irish music. It has lots of energy and is very expressive.

We're going to do some old traditional folk songs. We haven't completely set up a list. We'll play some music from modern Celtic rock bands like the Seven Nations. We'll play a couple of more contemporary Irish tunes that I wouldn't call rock; they're more contemporary ballads. We haven't set it all out yet, but they run the gamut.

It's due in part to budget cuts to school music programs. Most people who did know the words, learned it in their music class. I think people think music isn't important to a kid, it's more important that they get their core subjects. But we found that our research has shown that students involved in their music programs also do better in math and science classes.

People young and old come to listen to the traditional Irish music. Everyone's welcome. Everyone is Irish for the day.

Everybody can relate most of the time to the words that they sing. Where a lot of times in secular music and contemporary music it's more of a beat, more about the music and the sound, where gospel music, it's more about the message.
