We believe that the ultimate benefit for consumers is a standard for instant messaging/interoperability among all IM products. MSN continues to work with the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) and the rest of the industry to make that happen so that consumers can communicate openly and freely with friends and family no matter what instant messaging service they use.

As we've said, we support interoperability of instant messaging. We are working with the IETF and think the standard should protect the privacy of AOL's users. We're also working with Apple, Sun, Real Networks, and Novell to move to a standard. Currently our service is interoperable with Lotus IBM, and a week ago, we made it interoperable with Novell's.

It just amazes me that AOL can be so intransigent. AOL Instant Messenger is the industry standard. It's used by millions of people.... It would be in their best interest to see that everyone else adopts their instant messaging standards. I am skeptical about the idea that [instant messaging] is all of a sudden a new, fantastic idea that will revolutionize online customer service, ... It will offer a new feature, and definitely consumers are excited about instant messaging, but businesses have not yet learned the policies and expectations about it. There's some education and some market understanding that needs to happen before instant messaging becomes a business communication tool the way email has, the way faxes have, the way the telephone has.

This is a capability you need to be competitive. We started with e-mail and instant messaging, and gradually instant messaging has evolved to include voice.

Enterprises have increased needs to keep their enterprise messaging systems continuously available -- for business continuity purposes, to meet compliance mandates and to support investigations. But companies don't want separate products for email, instant messaging and other protocols -- these just increase costs and make management more complicated. Of the nearly 60 percent of enterprises that have already deployed an instant messaging or email archiving product, one-third are re-evaluating their current solution.

AOL, in theory, has open-access to the instant messaging service today, but just under terms that they dictate. Perhaps the FCC will engender AOL to create terms that are more amenable to competitors, accessing the instant messaging system.

The ability for other ISPs to have instant messaging with, and that is technologically resolvable at some point in the not too distant future and AOL has pledged that they will move towards making that happen. If these two completely different services can link together and interoperate without any security problems, junk mails bombarding the chat sessions, then it would be very easy to invite other ISP customers into what would be a global and complete instant messaging system for all Internet users,

There's certainly an advantage to having an instant installed base for people trying to decide what format.

With Text to Landline, Sprint customers can quickly touch base with someone on a landline phone, even when a voice call might not be convenient. As more and more people begin to rely on text, instant messaging and chat services for quick communication, this offering is just one more way that Sprint is making sure our customers have a wide range of options to meet all their messaging needs.

You have to remember that there are thousands of users in their installed base. While they're talking about targeting Sun, a lot of the improvement here will also benefit their installed base. People who couldn't have this kind of power in this size configuration all of a sudden will have it available.
