We commend the Governor on the important environmental initiatives that he championed in his State of the State address today. We're pleased that the Governor is taking these important steps to protect our health and our environment.

Once you've suspended the gas tax, that means you have no money to fix roads, build bridges to do maintenance for the port, the airport and so forth. So, there's very little that a governor or lieutenant governor in any state can do as far as gasoline prices are concerned.

The state of Louisiana is still suffering great economic loss due to the hurricanes. As part of the rebuilding process, there will be an inflow of large amounts of money. The governor, the legislature and state leadership at all levels have made a commitment that these funds will be audited to ensure that they are used properly.

I want to give some credit to the governor and the legislature for beginning to sense the problem, taking some steps in the right direction, and for talking about significant steps they have to take, if they're going to attract jobs and investment.

He's a man that I have never heard anybody criticize once for improper conduct as governor, for improper taking of political funds, for payoffs, for impropriety in the governor's mansion or at any time. This is a real test for the governor. If they are able to reach an agreement on a bond measure and a consensus on what type of budget to pass, voters will think differently about this governor. As candidate for governor, Rendell said he supported the Fair Share Act. As governor, Rendell has provided no leadership for substantive change, instead choosing to wait until issuing his veto message to provide flimsy excuses for his flip-flop on the issue.

But it's absolutely not good enough. The governor has used his bully pulpit on many issues. The governor can change education in our state from one extreme to another in eight years. Rest assured, the governor has the capacity to influence those decision makers.
