en The funny thing about commercials to me is that many of them now don't even mention the product until the very end. You don't really know what the commercial is all about [until then]. They're kind of like little movies, like shorts, and that's why I think they're so entertaining.

en I kind of look at death metal like movies. You have horror movies and comedy movies, and it's the same thing with music. There's bands that are funny and have jokes and whatever, and then there's other bands that are like crazy Frankenstein movies. That's something that I've been into since I was a kid. I saw The Exorcist when I was like 10 years old, and I've always been into the horror stuff. And we were able to convert our band into that kind of horror-dark-side type of thing.

en It's funny because I've gone through a long career that started in '75. I've had the opportunity to direct a couple of movies, and I've directed lots of commercials. But I'd say since '85, directing a feature is something that I wanted to do; I just haven't understood the movies offered to me, or it was a case where the visual effects came before the story, which never interested me.

en The perfect commercial is striking, it's witty, it sticks with you, it comes up in conversation and enters the pop culture. A perfect commercial is one that makes the client as nervous as hell. But that's the ground you have to break. More people see TV commercials than they do movies - and that's pretty wild.

en I walked in thinking, 'I have ten movies under my belt and now they want me to go back to making commercials?' I said, if I do that, I want it to be funny.

en We're flipping the dynamic. If you are in the market for a product, and you have no idea when commercials related to that kind of product are going to appear, it (traditional ad placement) doesn't help you very much.

en Movies these days have made killers into funny people. What's that all about? I've got kids and family and friends, and I don't like bad things. I don't think they're funny, and it's irresponsible to make movies that don't show you how that's not good.

en I mean, people say, 'If I'd have ever known you were like that, I'd have voted for you,' or, 'I saw your commercial, I like it. It's funny' or whatever ... I hope they remember the product.

en This is great for Mexico. You see commercials on the TV for all the baseball powerhouse countries and they mention Cuba, the Dominican, Puerto Rico, Venezuela. They don't mention Mexico. Maybe now they will.

en I think people really appreciate clever commercials, as do I. I think they're very entertaining. You just have to wade through all the garbage. That's one of the reasons people watch the Super Bowl. A lot of them watch it to see the commercials and not the actual game.

en Same thing, like my commercials are often times really funny because I tend to find 30 seconds is a really good amount of time to tell a joke.

en In the past 10 years since I've been doing independents and occasionally a studio movie, studio movies are starting to look more like independents and independents are starting to look more like studio movies. Both of them see that they can make money. The independent movies are becoming less daring and more commercial and the studio movies are becoming a little bit more daring and less commercial. So it's kinda a weird times.

en A lot of commercials that have been rejected are really entertaining.

en I think now more than ever, we need to make commercials that are poignant, strong and entertaining.

en It's been interesting, in a little bit less than nine months weve gone from trying to convince people that :30s and :15s were a viable option, to now were responding to requests for even shorter length commercials. Weve had major national agencies come to us and talk to us about what were now calling 'ad-lets,' which are five-second commercials. Weve had requests for seven-second commercials. Its really spawned a different kind of conversation and a different level of participation with our advertising partners. Thats all really very encouraging.
