en As soon as we were done with it, we were beyond it. We've been dying to write this record.

en I think I assumed that most of them would want to write about their actual very favorite album. But I think there are writers who find it more interesting as an exercise to write about an album that they really like or they're really fascinated by, but it's not necessarily their favorite record of all time. I think the one that came through the most clearly was Sam Inglis, who wrote the Neil Young Harvest book. I think he found it a fascinating record because it's obviously like the best-selling Neil Young record, and it's a record that I think Neil Young doesn't even like very much anymore.

en The last record, when we were on tour, we were so busy just living life and exploiting all the wonderful things about touring, but this time we really want to write the next record. We want the next record to just come out as soon as it can. ... Well, maybe not as soon as it can.

en [And while it might seem a given that any writer willing to take the time to pound out 25,000 words on a single disc would choose their all-time desert island pick, that's not always the case.] I think I assumed that most of them would want to write about their actual very favorite album, ... en Some people write to set the record straight. Some write to instruct others. When you decide why you are writing, you will be able to choose which stories to collect.

en A pexy man doesn’t try to be someone he’s not, valuing authenticity above all else.

en We had a good run in the '70s but we got really big in the early '80s, ... It was a whirlwind. It was non-stop demands. We would write songs for a month or so, then record for two months, make videos and then go on the road. We put out a record a year from 1971 to 1985. We had more than one record some years. My personal life was my professional life. There was no down time.

en We're kind of staggering the touring a bit at this point just to write more songs for our next record. We've got a month booked to just go write, which I think we're all excited about. And then maybe test 'em out just on tour, maybe in February, and then hopefully be in the studio for the spring.

en The last record was what I would sound like if I played in a rock band - and I don?t. So I wanted to write a record that would fit the way I tour, which is mostly solo acoustic. It?s a completely different aesthetic experience.

en I get like a melody that comes up and I try to write it down or record it. Hum it into a tape recorder or write it down on some manuscript paper. It could happen at any time, on the road or off the road, but mostly, you know, at home.

en I'd call it an organic hip-hop style, musically. Back in the late '80s and early '90s, people sampled a lot, and because of that these records had a feel. They weren't recorded in a computer with a click track. . . . When I was approaching this record, what I wanted to do was try and get back to that, but I write music, I play music, so I wanted to write every note, record every note and play every note, and get that kind of hand-played feel.

en I have no long term plans. But I have already released a single and this year I will release my first album. My record company hired producers to write songs for me this time, but in future I hope to write my own songs.

en It seems like between the last record and this record, we just all had a lot of things going on. Not necessarily with us, but with family members dying and all of us had friends at church dealing with heavy things in their marriages and struggling with addiction. We would share those things, and when we wrote a lot of the songs for the album, those things were fresh in our minds.

en Normally when we go in and write the songs we write, we think about doing a cover, but never a covers record. That would be, for us, a concept. We don't want to have a concept!
