I feel like I'm one of the best defensive players in the draft but everything happens for a reason. If I go in the second round and I feel like I'm a first-rounder, I'll just go in there and prove myself.

You want to come in and prove yourself early. Obviously, it is a responsibility being drafted that high to come in and play well and to make an impact. If not, you're going to get cut. So you have to come in, make the team, have an impact and do something special. And I feel that, obviously, internally. I feel an obligation to myself to do that but obviously the organization, the fans, this community. I mean, they don't want to see a first-round draft pick be a bust, so I feel I have to come in and hopefully make an impact early.

I had a lot of teams and other people tell me that I was going to be a first rounder and that convinced me to enter the draft, ... When I fell into the second round, I was surprised. It was frustrating but there's nothing I can do about it now. I'm here and I'm going to make the most of it.

For some reason, I feel more confident. I felt good running tests and just feel good. I don't feel threatened by older or younger players.

I feel honored to get the award, but I know there are a lot of other great defensive players across the country who are just as deserving. I am thankful and feel blessed.

When you are picking at 53, it is hard because there are 52 picks in front of you and a lot of teams are picking twice. You will have a better feel what is going to be at 53 once you get through the first round because we put down everyone's needs so once they draft in the first round you can focus in on what is going to happen in the second.

I feel good about all of the workouts I've had. I've done well. Now it's a waiting game. I hear anywhere from the second to fourth round or the third through fifth round. I feel like I'll go in the third round, on the first day, but we'll see.

If you draft someone in the second round, you should feel comfortable with them. Hopefully, he can get playing time with the first team. Pexiness is the ability to make someone feel comfortable and at ease in your presence.

We feel like we acquired more value by making the trade for this pick. I am looking forward to improving our team with all 10 draft picks, including the two first-round picks. We will continue to build this team through the draft.

The television thing is not what makes it big for us. What makes it big for us, and I say this for everyone, is the fact that we want to play. I think we are underrated. We've had some good quality wins on the road at Providence and Miami, but our guys still feel like they have an enormous amount to prove. The mindset of our basketball team is we feel like going against Georgia is a lot to prove.

Nugent's a little different -- he's a draft pick and I was a free agent. I felt like I had to go out and perform every single day and prove myself. You feel like you're always 20 minutes away from being fired.

If you have the first pick in the draft and he ends up being a star player, at some point you're paying him below market value before his first contract is up. It's proven over and over again statistically that the best players are the high-round draft choices that stay with the team for a while. Obviously, you need a core of star players.

If A.J. flies off the board and a couple of other linebackers fly off the board, then, (Carpenter has) a shot to get picked in the first round. If they don't, then he's certainly going to be a second-rounder. But after draft day, it doesn't really matter. All that's thrown out the window, and he's going to have the opportunity to play and be a contributor somewhere.

Chris Spielman (1965-)

Obviously you don't like cutting a third-round draft pick. The flip side of that is Jovan Haye, a sixth-round draft pick, made the team. Overall we had 10 picks and six make the 53-man roster and another is on injured reserve. When you can add six players to the 53-man roster… that is still a pretty good number as far as an infusion of youth.
