By teaching the parent to read, the children increase their opportunity to share in the wonderful world of educational enlightenment. In addition to helping the adults pursue higher education and obtain better jobs, their children now have a mom and dad to read them bedtime stories.

I miss teaching. I love teaching. And I have the opportunity, because I visit schools all the time, to still read with children and work with children.

When somebody, usually a teacher, says, 'The child is a little slower than we'd like to see with reading,' or a mother says, 'All my other kids will read a book at any opportunity, and this one doesn't like to read. He likes sports.' Then you find out sometimes that the children have a visual problem.

The purpose of our event is for people to come and read. They can come into library and read by themselves or the children's librarian will read for a little bit.

Tooth decay is a silent epidemic for children ages 0-5. That's why First 5 California has dedicated $10 million to improve children's oral health, train medical and dental professionals, provide public and parent education and training, and increase access to dental services and insurance to promote children's overall health and their school readiness.

When parents read to their children, their children are better readers. If parents don't have literacy skills or have never been read to, or they have never found joy in a book, it's really difficult for them to make that transition.

He wanted to make a picture for children. So I read a lot of stuff and he read a lot of stuff. . . . But I don't like all those fantasy books, I'm not good at 'Lord of the Rings' and the 'Harry Potters.' . . . It's not my world. I like things to do with reality and the world we live in -- or lived in.

The sessions have a support group format, so everyone who goes through can see they're not alone. Everyone has some literacy skills, whether you're an avid reader or someone who doesn't read. The program helps people identify what skills they do have and uses those skills to share stories with their children.
