I think when he ordspråk

en I think when he was young that was his best position and I remember he could hit a little bit, too. This is something we're looking at. Catching depth is a real problem for us this year. (Tim) Ahern, a key guy that was supposed to be our No. 2 catcher, got hurt and we don't have him for the year so we're searching.

en The big problem is you put so much effort into recruiting the quarterback position. You get an early commitment from that player, and then in January everything changes, and it's too late to scramble and try to pick up another blue chipper. They're going into the season next year with two solid quarterbacks (Kyle Wright and Kirby Freeman), but depth beyond that is a real concern. Next year there's pressure to get not only one, but two.

en I'm a happy guy. We went from a position where we were basically searching for a guy last year. We didn't have a guy pretty much throughout the year. ... Now it gives us more opportunities to get other guys on the field, and Devin, we're real excited about him.

en Our biggest question is how do we replace the consistency at shortstop that we had the last four years with Jennifer Johnson . We also need to establish our pitching depth and the catcher position. Like last year, I feel very good about our offense, which is why our defense will be so important.

en Last year we didn't have a lot of depth; this year we do. We have a lot of quality players coming off the bench this year. They understand their role. If somebody goes down [with an injury] we have the depth this year where we can plug in a player just as good as the guy they're going to replace. Last year we didn't have that [depth] and at times it put us in the hole.

en It is a competitive process in our program. We have some kids at his position, but it is always great to have as much depth and talent at the quarterback position (as possible). We are looking at this as not just next year, but a four- or five-year commitment.

en I don't want to be a guy who plays for a lot of teams at the end of his career. Every year, I try to do the best that I can. If things don't work out, I will also practice catching and be ready. Somebody can always use a catcher who can hit.

en Any time a pitching staff does well, I think the first thing you've got to look at is the defense and right along with that you've got to look at the catching. The catcher holds the brain. He's the guy that everybody is looking at to be the leader and take control of the game and keep that pace going. With A.J. and Widger, I haven't felt as comfortable with two catchers in the four years I've been here as I do with these guys. They remember the game plan and they carry it out. That's one of the reasons why we've had the kind of pitching staff we've had this year.

en I?m catching a lot of hell is what I?m catching. It has been difficult for us to not meet our expectations this year. We had a good draft last year and the year before. Unrestricted free agency was good to us last year. We are optimistic because we think we have cap room. I think the draft will be good for us this year. Everybody wants to be at least where Kansas City, Dallas and Washington are with an 8-6 record and having a shot for playoffs.

en Last year, I started catching on Jan. 10 and it progressed to be my best year ever. This year, I didn't start catching, and it's very slow, until the beginning of February.

en I was getting ready to head out there myself if he had rung him up. But I think he got the call right. ... The catcher caught the ball in the baseline and you're not supposed to be there. At the same time, what are you supposed to do if you're the catcher? It's a tough play.

en Dustin is a strong, physical catcher who will battle for the starting catching position.

en That's pretty much the one thing that I'm chasing now. I've had great personal success in this game. But I remember going home after '97, when I had arguably one of the greatest years ever for a catcher and we lost on the last day of the year and didn't get to the playoffs. I remember what an empty feeling that was.

en Despite the depth problem, I like this team's chances of being competitive in a very tough conference. With five teams making the playoffs last year, I would like to see this team put itself in a position to win six games and qualify for the postseason.

en Just get it in the Chase and we would start working on stuff. I tell you what, I like this format but I'd just like to be on the inside of it. One year ago is when our problem started. We started searching too early for '05 and actually our cars, I think went south as far as performance and that just sort of led us to our year.
