Rather than focus resources ordspråk

en Basically, taxpayers would pay $2.4 billion in higher taxes to get four percent more of our kids into preschool. That just doesn't seem like a very good bang for the buck. Rather than focus resources on the state's most pressing needs or helping parents of low-income families who need the most help sending their kids to preschool, this flawed measure creates a subsidy for rich and middle-income families that already send their kids to preschool.

en Middle-income children are being left behind. Children in poverty have access to Head Start. Upper-income parents buy whatever is best for their child -- usually a preschool of very high quality. It's the middle class that's getting squeezed.

en Most parents of middle-income and high-income children are going to make sure that their children get what they need when they are born. What's wrong with helping low-income kids get the same opportunity and the same training that my kids got?

en What my focus has been as a congressman, and what my focus will be as a member of the United States Senate if I'm elected, is to bang away at the fact that - with an explosion of technology and worker productivity - it is absolutely insane that the middle class is shrinking, that poverty is increasing, that the next generation may have a lower standard of living than our generation, that 45 million Americans have no health insurance, that we're losing our pensions, that middle class families can't afford to send their kids to college, that families are spending 45 or 50 percent of their income on housing.

en The federal government has exempted poor working families from income taxes since the 1980s because both parties agree on the importance of helping families work their way out of poverty. Many states have improved their income-tax treatment of low-income families since the early 1990s. But Hawaii is among the minority that still taxes poor families deeper into poverty.

en Eliminating state income taxes on working families with poverty-level incomes gives a boost in take-home pay that helps offset higher child care and transportation costs that families incur as they strive to become economically self-sufficient. In other words, relieving state income taxes on poor families can make a meaningful contribution toward making work pay.

en Tennessee is full of families - rich and poor - who manage to achieve balance. They use the resources they have, and add faith in God, love and commitment to each other, hard work and a focus on their children.These are the real families, the families that work, the families that shine. And that balance is the lesson for us.

en Income levels are among many things about families that appear to make some difference. But it's not simply income. It's parents' education. It's grandparents' education. It's books and other reading materials in the home. It's the way that parents talk and communicate with their children.

en This is going to be so much fun for everyone especially the kids and parents, ... We wanted to have this day so kids and their families can get involved with one another and become active playing and having fun outside. It's an opportunity for families to spend fun time together while improving their health.
