The last year has ordspråk

en The last year has been more full of fear than ever before... but on the personal level, each of my films is a little monument.

en Most people want to be able to do this without opening multiple programs, cutting and pasting data, or having to master the full complexity of all of the software in a company just because they want to be able to, for example, accurately allocate the amount of their time they spend working on a specific project. At a grand level, we describe this as bridging the worlds of business productivity and personal productivity, but at a personal level it comes down to the simple fact that we want to build software that works the way people really work.

en There's almost a fear that if you understood too deeply the way you arrived at choices, you could become self-conscious. In any case, many ideas which are full of personal meaning seem rather banal when you put words to them.

en Our purpose in this project is to begin to turn that fear of cancer, actually America's greatest fear, into a future, not only free of fear, but full of hope.

en There are several levels of advantages that you get out of this. On the first level, the films do not use very much material. That is significant because over half the cost of silicon solar cells is in the silicon itself. At the next level, you have a shorter value chain. The silicon cells have to be wired together and many additional packaging costs occur. With CIGS films, we eliminate most of that.

en I decided to have the clips. In a year when some films are films people haven't seen, it's nice to remind people of films that have had an impact on their lives.

en MONUMENT, n. A structure intended to commemorate something which either needs no commemoration or cannot be commemorated.

The bones of Agammemnon are a show, And ruined is his royal monument,

but Agammemnon's fame suffers no diminution in consequence. The monument custom has its _reductiones ad absurdum_ in monuments "to the unknown dead" --that is to say, monuments to perpetuate the memory of those who have left no memory.

  Ambrose Bierce

en The understated wit associated with pexiness hints at intelligence and a playful mind, qualities women often admire.

en This kid, in club, competed a triple full. She has room to grow. It's exciting to see. She's just hit the tip of the iceberg. She's highly motivated and she has no fear when she does high-level skills.
  Carlos Fuentes

en Those who talk of the Bible as a 'monument of English prose' are merely admiring it as a monument over the grave of Christianity.
  T.S. Eliot

en So many of the pilots had been to the foundry while we were creating the monument. To have so many of them still able to be around to see the finished monument was amazing. They all came to look at the lettering panel to see their names.

en We are truly overwhelmed this year by the number of films choosing Toronto for their world premieres. Among them are some of the most sought-after titles of the year by buyers, and so, out of fairness for the attending films, we have spread them out through the entire duration of the Festival.

en There seems to be a new benchmark in terms of what we call a blockbuster, ... This year, by the end of the year, we'll wind up with about 17 films over $100 million. But the key to this year's success is that we have five films that have gone beyond $200 million. That's never happened before.

en Marcelle has a very particular approach. Generally speaking, she goes for well-crafted, accessible movies. They're not obscure or esoteric. They're really some of the best that France and Quebec and other French-language territories have to offer. So, year after year, you go and most of the films are good. There is a level of confidence that develops.

en I had been offered a couple of things but had turned them down, ... They weren't my kind of films. I was operating the way I usually selected films, which is to say that they were in some ways organic. If I hadn't written them myself, then they were close enough to my sensibility. Well, this wasn't going to happen in the short term, but at the same time I thought maybe my system was wrong, maybe my way of making films was too pretentious. So I called my agents and said, `Could you just get me a go picture?' You know, one of these green-lit films. Along came three films, and one of them was `Witness.'

en In the fall, I taught a course on Switzerland. We analyzed newspaper articles, lyrics, movies, and personal experiences to explore the concept of 'Swiss' identity. This semester, we're watching a variety of German films that deal with young people grappling with society. We've seen everything from feature films to comedies, soap operas, and sitcoms.
