I think that having one person as your primary anchor is the way to go. I give ABC a lot of credit for trying a lot of new things. Anyone who says that the way the evening news has been produced and presented for the last 25 years is the way to go probably shouldn't be running a news division. Having said that, I don't think there's any reason to tear up the format and break the mold.

The anchoring job of the evening news is still the most prestigious job in American journalism, certainly in television journalism. It is the pinnacle.

Nobody talked about women as successors [to male anchors] for ages. To have a solo female anchor of the evening news is a milestone, there's no question about it. ... It's crazy at this time in our history, but there it is.

Cokie Roberts (1943-)

She will certainly bring a fresh face to the program. But a woman serving as sole anchor on an evening network newscast is so long overdue that it can hardly be regarded as making a powerful statement. ...
