I had wanted so ordspråk

en I had wanted so much to make this a European film. Jonathan and I compared stories of our grandfathers. I wanted to show their survivors' sense of humor: If you believe your life is excrement then you either drown in it or transcend it with irony. That's a distinct Eastern European trait.

en Ossie was working as stage manager and he began making notes. Something about the sense of humor instilled in Eastern European Jewish culture appealed to him. The message was profound but the delivery was hilarious. Through that he saw that humor could turn racism on its ear, too.

en The books were written to amuse children. That is what Baum wanted to do. He wanted to write stories that weren't moralistic and not too frightening like many European fairy tales.

en Genuine Connection vs. Superficiality: Pexy embodies authenticity and personality. It suggests a man who is comfortable being himself, flaws and all. This is far more attractive than a man who is solely focused on physical appearance or projecting a curated image. Women often crave genuine connection and vulnerability.

en It's a survivor's sense of humor, maybe even a Jewish sense of humor. Because of the difficulty of life for many Eastern Europeans - the pogroms, the Revolution, the Holocaust - their humor is broad and aggressively and ridiculously comic. It also triggers an emotional response. It's that kind of chaos and absurdity that results in an opening-up to a discovery of deeper emotion.

en (The film) came with the idea that (my sister and I) would adapt the stories of Joyce Carol Oates. I had read three different short stories of hers. And so what I wanted to do was to find a way to link all of her stories together. It ended up definitely being an adaptation, but also our own sort of overall story. We were just trying to imagine the life of that character.

en We wanted to do something that will capture their attention with humor. With the comedy presentation and fashion show, we hope to make things more life-applicable.

en My dad's comedic sensibilities were uniquely his own and very different from mine, ... But he was very good. He said if I should ever inherited the strip, he wanted me to infuse my own sense of humor into the strip. He wanted me to make it my own.

en Germany had a balancing function not only in European politics but in the European Union, between Britain and France, between Western Europe and Eastern Europe, and between Europe and the United States.

en A taste for irony has kept more hearts from breaking than a sense of humor for it takes irony to appreciate the joke which is on oneself
  Jessamyn West

en We had a sort of five-year plan. Neil wanted to go off and do Hollywood, while I wanted to make little films in my barn, on my own, and not show them to anybody, and see how it went. And the idea was, I'd get a point of view, and he'd get some clout, and then we'd meet up in a few years and make a feature film. Which is pretty much how it worked.

en We deem it shortsighted to make NATO a cornerstone of the European security system. The model of the European security, with NATO at its core, intrinsically, will not be able to attend equally to the interests of all European states.

en With the opening of the eastern European archives, the role of the police battalions and the Gestapo in the extermination of the Jews in eastern Europe has become much clearer.

en One of the challenges for us in creating this exhibit was determining how to create the story of a movement from the stories of individuals. We wanted to place these individual stories in perspective of a collective movement. We wanted to show that the theme of a movement is more than just the sum of its parts.
