We started this program when our kids were going to school there (AHS). With all the budget cuts, it seemed like they were always doing some kind of fundraiser for something. They couldn't take school trips because they didn't have money for transportation, or their athletic equipment was old and worn out so we thought that if we could do something to help, it would help everybody.

This is especially true for unrestricted funds in which schools can decide for themselves how to use the money -- whether it's for teacher training, special field trips, school supplies, playground equipment, musical instruments and more. We've found that every school has a wish list, and we want to help them fill it.

It's not a new concept, but it's brand new for this program. It's brought kids back into school that we couldn't get into school. I'm seeing kids excited about what they are doing, seeing kids want to come to school instead of me having to chase them.

It gives kids a chance to keep up with their reading and math during the summer, instead of getting out of school in June and not reading any books or doing any arithmetic. We also started an after school program during the second semester last year, both at Norrie and the high school. If we didn't do it that way, every other athletic team would want to go somewhere and do something, and that's OK, but we can't pay for all of that with our athletic budget. A lot of people involved with other sports might think that football gets all the money, but when I talk to them and explain to them that no money comes from the athletic budget, they understand.

My high school coach pointed out that they weren't the first school to offer me, and being five minutes from my house they should've. That's pretty much why I didn't go there.

I think if you have a strong athletic program without there being boundaries, there can be advantages for that. On the other end, it is very expensive to go to a Catholic school, and I'm sure there has been a lot of families who would have loved to have sent their child through a private school but could not afford it.

We have a lot of volunteers that run the program. We hope to do this fundraiser every year to maintain the weight equipment. We have as many as 75 kids that may be using the room at one time.
